well I do not know what happened to Martin Scorsese in most of his ultimate films of the last ten, even twenty years??…I wont say that Scorsese is overrated because he directed brillant films in the past..but nowadays….ohohoh…
Overrated as in a film I thought I would like, but thought was bad or did not meet expectations, and then had to hear my friends tell me why i was wrong for disliking or being disappointed by the film
(aka-films like Slumdog Millionaire don’t count because I never bothered to watch it)
examples
-Lost in Translation
-Synecdoche, New York
-Millennium Mambo
sometimes its kind of sad that i dont like certain movies, like prickly people i ought to give a second chance..
though i’ve watched Lost in Translation enough times to know it sucks
@ RTF- i totally agree about Scorsese
oh , and
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
@ OKI
DISCREET CHARM is a very, very silly movie, isn’t it? Even stupidly silly.
But I think maybe that was the point! (-:
Anything that anyone here likes is severely overrated, especially any movie by anyone who has grossed under 10,000 dollars.
@ david, i know, but i still disliked it… actually i found it really boring. oh well.
@Ruhbertow- arent we assholes? i feel bad about calling films overrated. its not an accurate term.

“overrated”

That film with Dudley Moore and Bo Derek, 10, I’d have only given it a 6
… the 25th hour too … although, under discussion, I’m fully open to change my opinion
Weird.
A movie I loved (and saw it twice it’s first week open) has been panned as over-rated and undeserving on about 30 other threads. It’s not mentioned here so I guess y’all changed your minds about Best Picture winner ‘CHICAGO’.
Welcome on board.
ah ! and .. that piece of narcisistic D-level exercise > The Dreamers by Bertolucci
Avatar for Christ’s sake!!
Shawshank Redemption
Silence of the Lambs
The Breakfast Club
of course there are many many more.
Shawshank Redemption is the most overrated movie by a mile. Now onto some controversial selections:
Ikiru. The first half works in a sentimental, Frank Capra sort of way, but the second half just beats you over the head with a sledgehammer. Still a good movie, but nowhere near Kurosawa’s best.
North by Northwest- I can’t quite pinpoint why. I’m sure it was thrilling back in the day as an early blockbuster, but I don’t think it’s aged too well.
Breathless- Broke a lot of ground. Almost fell asleep during the scenes of him rolling around in bed, rubbing his huge lips.
Fargo- Blah
Requiem for a Dream- Everything is the worst case scenario. Felt like Nancy Reagan propaganda.
Anything by Tim Burton except Ed Wood. Style over substance. Let’s see more scenes of girls twirling around while snow or leaves fall.
The Truman Show- Even if I could take Jim Carrey seriously in any role, it would still suffer from Frank Darabont gooey syndrome.
I may be biased against Brad Pitt, but Fight Club, Seven, Benjamin Button.
David Lean films- “Madness, Madness!”. Lol. Good films that also show too much age for their reputation. Lawrence of Arabia is far too bloated.
The Usual Suspects- Entire movie revolves around the gimmick ending which I saw coming from a mile away.
8 1/2- because I’m not intellectual enough.
The Exorcist- Hilarious
Suspiria- Also hilarious but more painful . “LA LA LA LA LA…”
The Princess Bride- Not funny, not exciting.
The Dark Knight- Horribly paced, sloppy, Batman’s whiney dialogue sounds like second-rate Bergman, action scenes aren’t thrilling….Only saved by Ledger’s performance.
Once Upon a Time in the West- Your face is not that interesting, and do you know any other songs on that damn harmonica?
This thread should really be shut down.
Yeah, if there was ever a thread designed to start arguments…
I don’t see why. It’s all in good fun, though a better title might be “Movies that you feel are held in overly high regard by the general public, and why”.
The Professional
Inception
Shawshank Redemption
Requiem for a Dream
The Prestige
Juno
Forrest Gump
Gran Torino
The Dark Knight
Memento
The Departed
Up
The Truman Show
…and many more
Final word: ALL movies are overrated (and, also, strangely enough, also underrated).
Next!!
CRASH
THERE WILL BE BLOOD
AVATAR
INCEPTION
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
THE DARK KNIGHT
JUNO
SCHINDLER’S LIST
SCARFACE
Anything STAR WARS
Anything HARRY POTTER
JURASSIC PARK
GOODFELLAS
A BEAUTIFUL MIND
AMERICAN BEAUTY
I guess I just shouldn’t click here, but the collective impression I get from these posts is that you people just don’t like movies very much, which is odd for a movie discussion site.
All Is Grace
A clear example in my mind is Oldboy… It was a total bore for me. A very mediocre film with extra sauce of sex and violence. At the end, I was like “So what?! What a piece of junk.”
