Michael Harbour

I find movie soundtracks to be good for listening to while I work. A few I especially like:
Lord of the Rings (the Leonard Rosenman soundtrack fro the 70s)
Suspiria
Jaws
Raiders of the Lost Ark

Other recommendations?

I haven’t seen the film but I have been listening to Peter Gabriel’s score for The Last Temptation of Christ. It’s absolutely fantastic.

“Coupla” must-haves, imo:

Angelo Badalamenti – The Straight Story
Elmer Bernstein – The Man With the Golden Arm
Elmer Bernstein – To Kill a Mockingbird
Elmer Bernstein – Far From Heaven
Terence Blanchard – 25th Hour
Miles Davis – Ascenseur pour l’échafaud
Jerry Goldsmith – Chinatown
Dave Grusin – The Firm
Dave Grusin – The Yakuza
Herbie Hancock – Blow-Up
Bernard Herrmann – Vertigo
Bernard Herrmann – Marnie
Bernard Herrmann – Taxi Driver
Bernard Herrmann – The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
Bernard Herrmann – The Day the Earth Stood Still
James Newton Howard – Wyatt Earp
James Newton Howard – The Village
Lee Byung-woo – The Host
Henry Mancini – The Party
Branford Marsalis – Music From Mo’ Better Blues
Hajime Mizoguchi – Jin Roh
Jerome Moross – The Big Country
Ennio Morricone – Giù la testa
Ennio Morricone – Once Upon a Time in America
The New American Orchestra – Blade Runner (+the original one)
Pink Floyd – Obscured by Clouds
David Raksin – David Raksin Conducts His Great Film Scores
David Raksin – The Bad and the Beautiful
Dianne Reeves – Good Night, and Good Luck.
Nino Rota – 8½ + Amarcord (I also recommend “Original Music for the Movies of Federico Fellini Composed by Nino Rota” which features beautiful arrangements of his works)
Ryuichi Sakamoto – The Sheltering Sky
Ryuichi Sakamoto – Tony Takitani
Shirô Sagisu – Neon Genesis Evangelion (the OSTs for the long features are marvellous, and the CDs include lots of outtakes)
Tom Waits – One From the Heart
V. A. – Collateral (2004)
Franz Waxman – Rebecca (the one conducted by McNeely is outstanding)
John Williams – A.I.: Artificial Intelligence
Stevie Wonder – Jungle Fever

Also, several scores by Hisaishi (the best out there, nowadays) are essential, especially:
Hana-bi
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Castle in the Sky
Kikujiro no natsu
Dolls
Howl’s Moving Castle

Hope this helps!

Dan8700 – Thanks! Great suggestions! I have a few of those but there are a lot more I hadn’t thought of.

Hadn’t thought of “Last Temptation” either. Going to check that out now

And right back to the OP, I second Rosenman’s LORD OF THE RINGS…just another example of how much more interesting Bakshi’s movie is than the new stuff.

Recently watched “The Hustler” bluray and was noting how cool the score is. Found it on CD on Amazon. It’s always an experience listening to the stand alone score.

>anything by Ennio Morricone

hmm, no.

Also, Touch of Evil is amongst Mancini’s minor works (moreover, doesn’t work as a stand-alone score). The same goes for “Fearless Vampire Killers” (go with his OST for “Knife in the Water”, instead; a jazz goodie). Bacalov’s La Città Delle Donne is nice – the intro theme is awesome! Burwell’s Miller’s Crossing has always sounded unbearably phony to me, even tho it works quite well in the movie.

Anywho, very good calls on Trouble Man (soul classic!) and A Single Man!

I thought this was a recommendation thread of our personal suggestions, my mistake it’s just Dan’s dictated view of scores… This shouldn’t be a hard concept honestly, very simple exercise, especially for Mubi.

@Dan: hmmm yes you’re right, i have terrible taste in music.
Please Michael, forget my recommendations about Mancini and Komeda, Dan is sooo right.

“Hey guys! look, I’m Dan and I have the BIGGEST list ’round here! yay!” you should see a psychologist dude.
Or you should definitely clean your ears.
