Shame might be well placed in between Bergman’s Silence and Tarkovsky’s Sacrifice. You may find some other possibles on my War Films list
I would recommend the Cuban film Lucia (Solas), made round the same time as Shame, for the lacerating first section of its triptych
From the Soviet Union, preceding Shame, The Cranes are Flying (Kalatozov), Ivan’s Childhood (Tarkovsky) and Commissar (Askoldov)- released later- are all well worth seeing and from Eastern Europe in the 60s, Three (Petrovic), Forest of the Hanged (Ciulei) and The Red and the White (Jancso).
I think she doesn’t mean Bergman’s “Shame” but to the one by McQueen, that means if she linked it to the correct mubi profile. Anyway, it would be kind if the OP a) mentioned on the thread which film she means in order to avoid confusion and b) described what she actually likes about the “Shame” she refers to.

I just saw Shame and loved it. For anyone who has also seen it, I was wondering if you could suggest some other movies that you find similar or that seem to be predecessors?
