Irreversible
The Searchers
Some Jacques Rivette would be wonderful.
And I forgot There Will Be Blood and (pretty much) anything from David Cronenberg, like Scanners. There are assuredly a few I can’t remember.
I can see them doing the original Evil Dead, but not Army of Darkness. I say more Kubricks (2001, Clockwork, etc.), Battle Royale, and maybe in the future some Boyle :)
I would love to see some more Aki Kaurismaki.
Satyajit Ray’s the Apu Trilogy.
It would be cool to see PT Anderson on the collection with Magnolia, Punch Drunk, or There WIll Be Blood.
More Guy Maddin – Heart of The World, Cowards Bend the Knee(should have been released as a companion to Brand Upon The Brain) , Archangel
Philippe Garrel, in particular the Inner Scar and Regular Lovers.
The Night of the Hunter, for sure.
@ oliver, i definitely agree with akira.
@ vance, boyle would be incredible.
@ jordan, a little jacques rivette never hurt anyone.
@ tommy, i couldn’t agree with some satyajit ray more.
speaking of satyajit, i’m waiting on anderson’s darjeeling limited, which i understand might be awhile… Criterion’s picked up everything else he’s put out, so I can’t imagine there not being a little eric anderson artwork for darjeeling.
blow up
I would love to see Kobayashi’s Human Condition. I know Janus just released a new 35mm print of it over the summer.
I do believe some Ray, S. and Rivette are coming in the future…
Night of the Hunter – yes!!!
also:
Sam Fuller’s cut of The Big Red One
please someone restore Detour
Stranger on the Third Floor
He Ran All the Way
Last Year at Marienbad.
I haven’t seen it yet, but i really want to. I can’t find it anywhere.
I agree with Tommy – more Guy Maddin. In general I think it is best if Criterion released films that did not already have high quality dvds available.
I’m eagerly awaiting the day BEFORE SUNRISE and BEFORE SUNSET get added to the collection. Linklater was quoted maybe a year or so ago as saying he was trying to get them in (or something to that affect,) but I haven’t heard anything about it in ages.
I’ll third Night of the Hunter.
also The Long Goodbye.
And I’d love to see David Lynch get the criterion treatment.
Certainly some, if not all, Charlie Kaufman films. Especially Synecdoche, New York. Also keeping it recent, In Bruges would be a terrific addition. Van Sant’s Elephant is certainly worthy. I’d also like to see some animated films get their due. Perhaps Princess Mononoke.
I agree with Nathan W. on “Stranger on the Third Floor”. Peter Lorre is brilliant, and my ailing VHS copy will not do much longer.
I already mentioned this on the most shocking endings topic page, but Sergio Corbucci’s The Great Silence needs to be in the collection. I believe it’s among the greatest westerns ever made with the most unforgettable and shocking ending I’ve ever seen. The current dvd is poorly dubbed. Plus, it would put a Spaghetti Western and Klaus Kinski in the collection!

Why oh why hasn’t Jodorowsky’s Santa Sangre been snatched up by Criterion yet? There’s a superb Region 2 release, but I’d love to see a nifty, U.S.-friendly Criterion edition of this incredible film. Ditto Polanski’s Repulsion. As for directors, I’d love to see Shinya Tsukamoto get the appreciation he deserves, as well as some of Neil Jordan’s other films.
Last Year at Marienbad
A Matter of Life and Death
A Place in the Sun
and
of course, The Night of the Hunter
I too would love to see ‘Santa Sangre’ get a proper U.S. release, and Criterion needs a Jodorowsky film almost as badly as they need a David Lynch film. Oh, hey, a proper re-release and stunning packaging would be a great fit with ‘The Elephant Man’.
I’d also love to see a second John Cassavetes box or maybe just a single release of ‘Husbands’ (actually I really beg for this). A nice double disc version with multiple cuts ala …Chinese Bookie would be God-Sent.
And Whit Stillman’s ‘Last Days of Disco’, and ‘Barcelona’ for that matter, but ‘LDOD’ needs a proper release and of course it’s an incredible film and would greatly benefit from the Criterion touch.
1.Satantango
2.Samurai Assassin
3.Chushingura: 47 Samurai
4.Un chien andalou
Nicholas Ray’s Bigger Than Life and In a Lonely Place.
I’ll add some out of print films: Il Deserto Rosso, Anna (le comédie musicale), La Guerre des Boutons, Zazie dans le Métro, CinéVarda, Chateau en Suède, Boy Meets Girl, La Dentellière, Black Cat, White Cat (Crna macka, beli macor), Celine et Julie vont en Bateau, Paris Nous Appartient, Le Plus Vieux Métier du Monde, & Kes.
Fellini’s Casanova.
Oliver White
I’m not sure if this has been posted yet; I may have overlooked it. Regardless, as the title suggests.
I think Repulsion (needs a legitimate release), No Country for Old Men, Akira, and Children of Men. Others that may function more like Armageddon would be Shaun of the Dead, Army of Darkness, and Snakes on a Plane (a study in viral marketing). Okay, maybe not SoaP so much, but you see what I mean.
You can hate on my list all you want, but I’d also like to hear what everyone else thinks.
