Movies That Should Be In the Criterion Collection

The American Friend

I distinctly remember the vivid blues in the Metro station, but the currently available DVD captures none of the detail. This is a gorgeous Wim Wender/Robby Mueller work that deserves the Criterion treatment.

The Unreleased Rolling Stones Documentary: COCKSUCKER BLUES.

If Criterion could take care of all the legal issues, that’d be a Godsend.

Some Peter Greenaway, partically The Cook, The Thief his Wife and Her Lover, would be cool. Someone needs to stop his movies from fading away into oblivion. And howabout some noir classics like Kiss Me Deadly. I’m just sayin…

raysquirrell, i agree that a Criterion version of “The Trial” would be really nice… but there was actually a very nice R1 version released. not sure if i can post links on here… but here ’goes….

http://www.amazon.com/Trial-William-Chappell/dp/B000C6NP9U/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1231537119&sr=8-13

i know the cover doesn’t look like much… but, i have this version, it’s actually a very nice transfer, has some special features, interviews with peter bogdanovich, and even a commentary (i think it’s by pb, i’m not at home right now so i can’t look.) if you can find it, pick it up.

Boogieboy: According to criterionforum.org’s ongoing list, Criterion has confirmed a release for “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, & Her Lover” via a newsletter, I think. Anyway, there’s no date yet, but supposedly it’s just a matter of time.

Both of these titles have been mentioned, but I’ll chime in just to (hopefully) add a little weight to the demand… ONE is “Wise Blood.” the other is “Los Olvidados.”

I’ve seen posts (some, over a year ago) that Criterion was going to publish “Wise Blood” in the (then) near future. I’ve been checking their site (and other fan sites) and no one seems to know anything about it. However, if you search the criterion-forum boards, you can easily find the post, from a criterion employee, saying that “Wise Blood” would be coming soon….

Almost every Bunuel film can be had on DVD, or at least on VHS, except for “Los Olvidados.” It can be had on VHS in PUBLIC DOMAIN form— in other words, not the best print, and NO high-lighted sub-titles. I have a good pd copy, but the problem of the white titles against a white (or very light) background, can make it a hard read.
It’s sorely in need of some kind of restoration, and a DVD release.

Even if criterion passes on this, Bunuel’s BEST FILM EVER, any DVD publisher that would offer even a good public domain DVD (if it had high-lighted titles), would have my dollars.

Criterion has, for whatever reason, passed on many, many good films.
Although another person here asked for “I Am Cuba,” I see no point in a Criterion-released version of it now. There’s already a fabulous DVD available. For years, there wasn’t even a good VHS of this incredible film. I am very pleased with my DVD from Milestone, and even if criterion did offer a newer, “better,” print, I wouldn’t spend a dime on it.

Thanks for the acknowledgment LEWIS886. Though I don’t believe that the Criterion Collection has a rule against publishing a DVD for movies that are already on DVD. I believe that DAZED AND CONFUSED had three previous DVD releases before the Collection decided to release the movie in a special 2 disc set with booklet, poster and special packaging. In fact I believe all of Wes Anderson films are released through the Criterion Collection simultaneously with their official studio DVD release.

What I am looking for is a Definitive Edition DVD of ORSON WELLE’S ‘THE TRIAL’. Something like the French 2-disc release of the film. I have seen the release that you mention, and it is definitely a step up from my public domain copy of the film (mine looks like they extracted the video from a bad VHS with tracking errors and all).

Some other films I know of that could use a Criterion Double-Dip:

Bound (The Watchowski Brothers first film. The current DVD release is just plain pathetic.)

The Game (David Fincher has even said that the Criterion had a good set ready for release.)

CONTOUR a film by the Stunt People directed by Eric Jacobus (I will keep repeating this title until everyone on this site knows about it.)

Orson Welles dose Shakespeare – Falstaff/King Lear/Macbeth/Othello (this would make a great ECLIPSE release)

Some more Welles – David and Goliath/The Stranger/Lady of Shanghai

I will second DANA on the choice of ‘Los Olvidados’. It is one of Bunuel’s best films and is not on DVD. Maybe it can be put in an ECLIPSE release along with ‘The Nazarine’ and ‘Tristana’. Maybe it could be given the name BUNUEL IN BLACK AND WHITE.

“Cocksucker Blues” would be an interesting addition.
While the subject is music/ concert films or documentaries, I think “Stop Making Sense” would be a great addition too. I’ve loved this movie since I first saw it and packaged with a some documentaries, director and band commentaries and outtakes etc., it would make a fine addition.
Or maybe as a box and/or two disc set with “True Stories.” That would be really cool too.

Sticking to films that aren’t available on DVD in the US (to my knowledge).

Possession (Zulawski)
Celine and Julie Go Boating (and others by Jacques Rivette)
Red Desert
Last Year at Marienbad

A ton of films from Japan’s Art Theatre Guild. Most essential:
Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets
Funeral Parade of Roses

An Eclipse set for mid-period Nagisa Oshima: Diary of a Shinjuku Thief, The Man Who Left His Will on Film, Death By Hanging, The Ceremony etc.

Hausu (Japanese “horror”, 1977)

Directors already out on Criterion:
More from Kon Ichikawa, especially Odd Obsession.
Ansatsu (Masahiro Shinoda)
The Human Condition trilogy (Masaki Kobayashi)

…and a few that are on DVD but in awful versions:
STALKER
La Notte
The Apu Trilogy

Well I’d like to see some films on Criterion that already have pretty good releases, so I’ll try to limit this to films that NEED a criterion release.

  1. Pasolini’s Porcile – this is my favorite Pasolini film and the current release is UNWATCHABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually, now that I said that I remember that this one company, I forget the name, released several Psaolini films, including Hawks & Sparrows and The Gospel of Saint Matthew, and the transfers are all terrible.

#1. Lynch’s Lost Highway – Lost Highway is one of Lynch’s greatest film, often misunderstood and almost universally underrated. It also has one of the worst NTSC releases that I’ve ever seen.

  1. Tarkovsky’s Stalker – This is my favorite Tarkovsky film and the NTSC release that I have splits the feature between two discs and the transfer could be better.
  1. reprint Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers
  1. Almodovar’s All About My Mother – No Almodovar on Criterion? Seriously?
  1. Ray’s Apu Trilogy – ALL OF THEM (but released separately)
  1. Kieslowski’s Colors Trilogy AND Decolouge – they already have decent DVD releases, but I’d like to see Criterion release these onto BD.
  1. Lynch’s Mulholland Drive – mostly because the current releases edit a certain part of the film in an ugly way
  1. Tsukamoto’s – Vital, Tokyo Fist, and/or Tetsuo

Also Haneke’s Cache, Code Unknown, or Funny Games.

Nick Ray- In A Lonely Place
Wim Wenders- The American Friend

And am I correct, has Michael Mann not yet been given the Criterion treatment? Tsk tsk, more player hating. This must stop. Last Of The Mohicans, immediately!

Bob Stutsman

Lena Wertmuller’s Seven Beauties and Swept Away – already posted on another thread for a director Criterion does not have respresented; Paul Verhoeven’s Soldier of Orange, Spetters, and The Fourth Man (esp. this latter – a stylistic masterpiece).

New Criterion transfers of The Killing and Paths of Glory – the MGM DVDs are terrible compared to the old LD releases.

Soderbergh’s version of Solaris, including the long cut with the more philosophical/scientific discussions cut from the tight theatrical cut.

Milos Forman’s Hair – a very underrated film, poorly represented on home video.

Criterion treatments of all Keaton and Chaplin classics.

Jeremiah Johnson.

The Player.

Second the motion on Three Colors Trilogy and The Decalogue.

And one more for Night of the Hunter.

And something by Mario Bava. Probably Black Sunday or I Vampiri, or possibly Black Sabbath.
