GUMMO!
@Marcus
I absolutely agree. There’s a lot of very good movies that could very well fit in the Criterion Collection, but you can easily find a good DVD release. There’s no point in rereleasing a movie.
What the Criterion Collection gives to a movie is appeal and recognition. I don’t think we’ll ever see one of the older Herzog’s masterpieces in the Criterion Collection unfortunately, but it doesn’t mean that he’s not a great director. It’s just that it’s already available.
im not sure what youre trying to say.
and im prerry sure herzog owns all/most of his movies, so he could very well release them in the future. most herzogs are available.
It is not because a film is not in the Criterion Collection that it is not a good film or very influential in the history of cinema.
i never said it was. im still confused, lol. wher did you come to the conclusion that i think that?
Big misunderstanding, lol. I agree with you, I was just adding to your reflexion.
no worries
I just saw this film last night but it belongs in the cannon of great films and also the criterion collection. I am talking about Mon oncle d’Amerique. I would also like to see Rocco and his brothers get the the criterion treatment. Open City and Pasian finally get a worthy print.
la notte, blow-up and la dolce vita
ken park
Seconds
Kiss Me Deadly
Paths of Glory (Martin Scorsese Commentary?)
Killer’s Kiss
The Killing
Baby Face Nelson
Bigger Than Life
Deadline – U.S.A.
John Carpenter’s Elvis
The Fixer
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Kafka
Knock on Any door
Luchino Visconti’s The Stranger
I haven’t seen it, but judging from Jigoku and the way they speak of it on Jigoku’s special features, not to mention it supposedly being the greatest adaptation of its source material, I’d like to see Nakagawa’s Ghost Story of Yotsuya added to the collection.
I know they’ve probably been mentioned, but I’d Love to see these in the Collection at some point!
Tom Waits’ Big Time
The Pawnbroker
The Pumpkin Eater
Love with the Proper Stranger
The Night of the Hunter
Mystery Train
Heathers
They Drive By Night
Europa 51
Stromboli
My Voyage to Italy
Joan of Arc at the Stake
Fear
The African Queen
mystery train is coming in the future
Really? That’s awesome news!
I’ve heard rumors of “Love with the Proper Stranger” and the Bergman/ Rossellini films coming to the collection… you know if there’s any truth to that?
Criterion really needs to pick up some UK titles that aren’t on dvd or blu-ray here at all, but are significant films:
The Bed Sitting Room (Richard Lester)
A Taste of Honey (Tony Richardson)
The Leather Boys (Sidney Furie)
The Baby of Macon, Drowning by Numbers, Prospero’s Books (Peter Greenaway)
Bronson (Nicolas Refn)
I’ll also put in votes for “The Great Silence” and “Bigger Than Life”, mentioned elsewhere in this thread and put in a plug for these Robert Downey Sr titles that might make a nice Eclipse set:
Pound
Greaser’s Palace
Chafed Elbows
Putney Swope
Finally, I think there’s no better time to put “David Holzman’s Diary” back in the Criterion catalog in this age of navel-gazing indie filmmaking.

Well Criterion is very much neglecting the very vibrant and rich, albeit underrated, south-east asian cinema which of course i came from. Films of apichatpong weerasethakul, pen-ek ratanauang, hou-hou hsien, from my fellow countryman: lino brocka, ishmael bernal(his film himala(miracle) won the CNN best asian film) and the current cannes best director brilliante mendoza should be considered a spot in their collection. Although they are praised by the international critics they are still relatively unknown outside of their country and I think its high time for them to be introduced, by way of criterion, to the international audience.
George Stevens’s original cut of The Greatest Story Ever Told ….a neglected flawed film with brilliant touches spectacular cinematography , respected score and a great performance by Max Von Sydow . If criterion can make room for The Blob, they can give this important director’s last important film it’s due.
The Rossellini films – Stromboli, Europa 51, and Voyage to Italy – will be coming sometime in the future. I have received email confirmation of this from Criterion. They don’t have a release date set right now.
You can never have too much Rossellini!

whoops……its due!
I think someone exposed this idea already, but it’d be awesome if there were an eclipse box for either Paul Morrissey, or just Andy Warhol. Preferably just Warhol’s films.
Ken Jacobs nervous magic lantern “films”
The World’s Greatest Sinner
The Day the Clown Cried
City of God. And more Scrosese films.

why are people saying herzog or tarrantino movies or fight club, etc etc? those direcotrs or movies either have some kind of box set or a delux edition dvd with special features on par to a lot of criterions. what would be the point of releasing those.
most movie nerds (Like myself) probably already own the herzog box sets (with great audio commentary), the kubrick box set, pulp fiction, etc etc.
AKIRA? if criterion released that, do you realize that would the 3rd or 4th special edition dvd of that movie?
what about great movies with NO dvd release or a cheap/shitty release. those should get first priority. stop naming your personal favorite movies, lol.
whoever said “Safe”, films by peter greenway or ozon’s shorts hit the nail on the head.
