Movies That Should Be In the Criterion Collection

Ryan Biddle

Emptyhand, surely you meant John, not William, Hurt.

This is a very exciting thread. I realize some of these may be considered inappropriate, have already been mentioned on this thread or have already seen a Criterion release on laser or otherwise, that said…

DEAD MAN really needs it.
New version of METROPOLIS, great call.
And I second THE DARK KNIGHT and GRINDHOUSE (complete), in a perfect world.

To All You Herzog Fans Out There:

All (or most) of Herzog’s films are out on ANCHORBAY, in beautiful remastered director’s cuts with commentary by the master himself.

So maybe Criterion should focus on more needy material ( Abel Gance, Ambersons, Marienbad, …)

A lot of the films mentioned already have great DVDs out and it would be an exercise in redundancy to release them in a CC edition, plus there is the whole issue of acquiring the rights to the films which is one of the biggest obstacles. There are a few Janus titles I think should be released that haven’t (like Carne’s Le Jour Se Leve), but mostly I’d like to see either an eclipse or full-fledged Criterion release of some of Jean Epstein’s films, which I don’t see happening judging by how obscure he is and how little revenue CC would get from it.

Belmondo makes a good point. Boogie Nights doesn’t need a Criterion release. Although I’d go apeshit if it got onto the collection, it’s 2 disc special edition already has enough.

I’m not sure if anybody said this already, which would be shocking, but:

Agreed Belmondo. It would be redundant, and I wouldn’t want to have to replace a lot of titles in my collection.
Besides, while I’m sure a lot of creators would like Criterion to release their films. In many cases the filmmakers have already said everything they want to about a film, and they want the work to speak for itself. They chose not to do commentaries.

Sonja, I second your request for some Hal Hartley!

My #1 film that should see a Criterion release, and fast, is Ken Russell’s The Devils (of Loudon). It is astonishing to me that this extraordinary movie is not available in an uncut, remastered DVD, or pretty much in any form. I hope that the film has some fans on the Criterion staff and that a few people are working on making it a part of the collection. The film is simply amazing, and the subject matter could not be any more timely or important.

I have to agree with the sentiment, stated a few times in this thread, that Criterion should be most interested in releasing those films that are not readily available on DVD or are in need of new, retouched or unedited versions. And in closing, let me say that I just found this forum today and am loving it!

Edit—just read more of the thread and noticed JoeR’s Ken Russell shout out, and quite a few others hoping to see The Devils. Would begging help? I’m quite sure that praying won’t

More Scorsese. Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino, and Bringing Out The Dead. I would also love to see some of Todd Solodz films. Welcome To The Doll House, Happiness, and Storytelling.

Koyaanisqatsi…and I agree with Ryan about Popeye, that should definitely be a Criterion

ROLLING THUNDER (1977) would be amazing! Not even available on dvd.

I’m sure they’ll eventually get to Kurosawa’s DREAMS.
Some Elia Kazan would be nice, starting with A FACE IN THE CROWD.
VIVA ZAPATA! is also not on disc yet.

There’s a lot of films I’d like to see make it into the collection, but to start off…

Out 1 (so I can, and other people, can finally SEE IT)
Los Olvidados (don’t know why they haven’t released this yet)
Chimes at Midnight
Nouvelle Vague
Vivre sa vie (seriously, Janus Films already rereleased it; what are you guys waiting for?)
Barton Fink (I think it would be neat)
Eraserhead
The Man Who Wasn’t There
some sort of Andy Warhol collection
Stalker
Henry Fool
Kings of the Road

There’s a whole lot more, but you get the idea.

Ryan Biddle said some really good ones and some REALLY bad ones, but the funniest, most unlikely, and also the one I most agree with is “GRINDHOUSE”

I know this will never happen, but I’d love to see Hayao Miyazaki get the Criterion treatment. Or at least some animated films.
