That’s a nice list. I meant we could go off the res and pick what we thought was best for the year, nominated or not.

1997: L.A. Confidential. Great movie.

Wait, you think Return of the King should have won? I mean, it sure was well-made, but Best Picture? I’d have to say Lost In Translation. Not only was it my favorite movies of the year, but it’s one of the best films I’ve ever seen.

Now, I don’t know if we’re talking only about films that were nominated, or not. If not, I would say that Synecdoche, New York should have won last year; it was, without a doubt in my mind, the best film of the year. If we are only talking about films, though, that were nominated, I would say either Milk or Frost / Nixon. Van Sant is an expert director, with incredible skill; the film was just overall a very good movie. Frost / Nixon, though, was absolutely brilliant, a work of extreme craftsmanship. I just love that movie.

Woah, Ryan. You most certainly did not see the same films I saw last year. There were many movies that came out last year that were great, and which, sadly, were shunned by the Oscars. Frankly, The Wrestler could have gone on there; that was a rather superb film. The Reader, though, definitely should NOT have been on the ballot, as it just was not a good movie.

Sure, there are some years that aren’t so great for movies, but there were plenty of good ones that came out last year.

For 2005, I would have actually chosen Good Night and Good Luck, but that’s for sheer love of the movie. Also, it was expertly made.

I hate Forrest Gump solely because it beat Pulp Fiction for Best Picture. I think I watch the Oscar to give me something to be angry about.

Sergio Romero

I will put films that won, and then the films that Should Have Won (SHW). If I don’t put a film that should have won on a year, that means I agree with it.

1990: Dances With Wolves. SHW: Goodfellas
1991: The Silence of The Lambs
1992: Unforgiven
1993: Schindler’s List
1994: Forrest Gump. SHW: Pulp Fiction
1995: Braveheart. SHW: Apollo 13
1996: The English Patient. SHW: Fargo
1997: Titanic
1998: Shakespear in Love. SHW: Saving Private Ryan
1999: American Beauty
2000: Gladiator
2001: A Beautiful Mind. SHW: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
2002: Chcago. SHW: The Pianist
2003: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
2004: Million Dollar Baby
2005: Crash. SHW: Brokeback Mountain
2006: The Departed
2007: No Country for Old Men
2008: Slumdog Millionaire

Scuba, no way “Pulp Fiction” was worthy of Best Picture—so glad it didn’t win.

I’d take any of the following 1994 releases over “Pulp Fiction”…

“Quiz Show”—Totally friggin’ underrated film, lays bare the bullshit of television ala “Network”, great performances, cinemaphotography, direction, screenplay…unlike “Pulp Fiction” (a non-think film masquerading as counterculture art), “Quiz Show” is an intelligent movie with a bitter taste of cynicism that is well overdue for the praise it deserves as one of the greatest films of the 1990s.

“Fresh”—actually made in 1991, but this is miles ahead of “Pulp Fiction”—and Samuel L. Jackson’s performance here is much more intriguing than the one he gave in Tarantino’s overrated splatterfest.

“Ed Wood”—I still don’t believe Tim Burton gets enough respect for this film. A commercial flop due to several reasons: it’s in black-and-white, about a relatively obscure filmmaker (and a lousy one at that), and I guess Johnny Depp playing a fairly unsexy character was another reason for its quick evaporation from cinema screens. Say what you shall about Burton’s later flicks, but “Ed Wood” is a masterpiece all the way. At least Martin Landau got his due, picking up the Oscar for Supporting Actor.

“The Professional”—very fair to compare one crime drama to another crime drama, and Luc Besson’s underworld thriller leaves “Pulp Fiction” in the dust. Also, Natalie Portman wears the pageboy haircut better than Uma Thurman: compare…

—and what IS it with that Uma-Travolta dance scene? It looks like your unhip teachers trying to shimmy at your grade six disco.

The only way you’ll see two people looking stiffer than this is if you watch a particularly hot gay porno.

…and those 1994 film picks are just off the top of my head in the wee hours of the morning.

1976 had “Taxi Driver”, “Network” and “Rocky” all jostling for the Best Picture award.

A tough choice…I’m very fond of “Network.” But I can say the same for the other films. Still, if “Network” had won, maybe the film would be better remembered. It’s not exactly well-known with the post 1980 generation (by the way, anyone under the age of 30 who knows and loves “Network” seriously impresses me).
