Movies to watch under the influence of LSD?

I hope this isn’t flagged as an inappropriate topic or something. Anyone got any suggestions? I found one thread related to this but it was Tarkovsky-specific so I was hoping for some more ideas. I watched Mirror last week on acid and it was a pretty revelatory experience. Anyone had some eye-opening times on acid with films?

I heard Enter The Void is a great film to watch on acid, as well as Akira.

all that jazz is the greatest movie ever made. at least it was once…

Fantasia was conceived during an opium trip, and I’ll be surprised if Fantastic Planet wasn’t as well.

I’ve never seen a film while under the influence of that particular drug (though it has been a very, very long time since taking it). But I can’t really imagine wanting to. Was way too busy contemplating the depths and minutiae of the universe to focus on any movie.

Music seems to be much more complementary to me.

Okay, there were a couple of films I would watch: Akira and The Ghost in the Shell. You can watch Fantasia but I recommend turning the sound down and playing Einsturzende Neubaten very loud.

Also, playing Sonic the Hedgehog with Ministry blaring was a blast.

In any case, I strongly suggest you don’t watch anything disturbing.

My thoughts exactly, Matt. With Timothy Leary dead (as noted even before it happened by the great Moody Blues) and even the inventer of LSD, Albert Hofmann, now dead (at 102, proving LSD may not be as damaging as it once figured in the media), I would have thought the psychedelic days long over. In any case, skip the film and just listen to Revolution 9 on the Beatles white album says this ol’ hippie…There are far too many of those infinitesimal minutiae (as mentioned above – heh) to experience to bother with something as ‘solid’ as a film.

Ha! Oh, boy! The only rockin’ I do anymore is in this…

Long live the psychedelic age!

Not that I’d wish to promote the use of LSD, psychogenic mushrooms or peyote smoothies to enhance the film experience (or at any other time, for that matter), but if someone here wishes to indulge, would you please give “My Dinner With Andre” a go and let me know if hallucinogens make Andre Gregory any more tolerable?

I’d recommend the mirror. Not the Tarkovsky movie, an actual mirror.

Mirrors on psychedelics are terrifying.

I have tried a few times to watch a film after taking mushies, but the thought has always been too daunting. There is too much going on in my head just looking at a wall yet alone a film. But as for the more conventional watching films stoned, Scanners remains my most interesting experience.

Yeah, don’t look into a mirror.

Go to Six Flags.

Eh.

Unlike Chandler, I enthusiastically promote the use of psychedelics. The caveat would just be to do your research and understand set and setting and what not. Having done your due diligence, I’d then advise you skip film and stick to music as others have advised. You could go old school like Oxymoron, but there are plenty of good new psychedelic bands. The Black Ryder is one of my favorites in this style. But consider switching to something quite different like Amon Tobin’s “Isam” or Battles “Gloss Drop”.

But my further argument against film in this scenario is that films require watching. My top recommendation for you during your trip would be a steamy roll in the hay to the accompaniment of Massive Attack’s “Mezzanine”.

Try some experimental films with LSD. Perhaps the films of Len Lye, or Standish Lawder.

^ Great call on 2001, and Arrabal.

To paraphrase Led Zeppelin, “…it’s been a long time since I rock and rolled/it’s been a long time since I did the stroll….”

To the best of my recollection, much merriment can be had with

2001, as stated above

Koyaanisqatsi

The Wall*

Woodstock*

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari*

*music videos, concert DVDs and silent films take on a whole new dimension.

Be safe.

Best film I ever saw on acid: Who’s Harry Crumb. I nearly bust a gut.

Oxymoron

Scampi’s post reminds me: Ralph Bakshi’s film version of R. Crumb’s Fritz the Cat might be a suggestion (or other Bakshi films from this period), He had a cool sort of psychedelic style. Not recommended: The Trip (1967) with Peter Fonda. The acid trips in that film are just for laughs. But, Fonda’s friend, Dennis Hopper, did a better job in his trippy scene in New Orleans in Easy Rider.

Mirrors on psychedelics are terrifying.

I’ve found them to be amazing, and the only time I legitimately hallucinate. Simply sit and think “Who am I looking at? Who is doing the looking? Am I the person in the mirror?”

But anywho, I’ll recommend some music:

The “My Goal’s Beyond” album.

Any of the chanting of Krishna Das. Sing along and you’ll really be far out, maaaaan.

Thanks for all the recommendations. 2001 and Koyaanisqatsi are definitely high up on the list. Tarkovsky’s Stalker is also very high up on the list, mostly because I recently read Geoff Dyer’s Zona in which he discusses the merits of tripping while watching Stalker.

Also, to those that are suggesting I listen to music on acid, I have already gone that route a number of times. I’m using this summer to experiment with the drug. So far I’ve listened to The Smile Sessions by the Beach Boys, Bitches Brew by Miles Davis, Are You Experienced by Hendrix (a completely overrated and uninteresting album I discovered) and Blueberry Boat by the Fiery Furnaces. 3/4 were amazing experiences.

LSD would probably be too intense to concentrate on a film, but I’ve never done it so who knows? I did shrooms once and it mostly made me want to explore nature and act like a little kid. Weed seems better suited for film watching. Zabriskie Point would be great high.
