The actor playing the Winklevoss twins in Social Network was pretty good.
More importantly, JCVD has done this.
Bette Davis in Dead Ringer
Haley Mills in The Parent Trap
Jack Lemmon in The Great Race
Kevin Kline in Dave
Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins
and whatever that thing is where Michael Keaton plays all aspects of himself
Adaptation
Olivia de Havilland in THE DARK MIRROR
Jackie Chan in TWIN DRAGONS – probably one of the best single actor/dual role performances I’ve ever seen.
When Lindsay Lohan’s PARENT TRAP came out, I thought, “It would have been better if they’d gotten actual twins to play the roles like they did in the original PARENT TRAP. Oh, wait…” That’s how good Hayley was in that film.
And don’t forget Patty Duke on TV in “The Patty Duke Show.”
Edward Norton in Leaves of Grass
Richard Dreyfuss – Moon Over Parador
Michael Keaton – Multiplicity *playing clones not twins
Leonardo DiCaprio – Man in the Iron Mask
Andy Garcia – Steal Big Steal Little
Lily Tomlin & Bette Midler – Big Business
Christian Bale in ‘The Prestige’
^spoiled
Dick Van Dyke doesn’t play twins in MARY POPPINS, he just plays two entirely different roles.
John Lithgow in Raising Cain off the top of my head…
^actually, he even played more roles in this if I recall….
Multiplicity..
Dominique Pinon in The City of Lost Children.
Real twins are best. My faves are the Malet brothers: Laurent and Pierre.
yesterday i watched the island and ewan mcgregor played himself and the guy he was cloned from
it was directed very convincingly and i was impressed at the interaction
also it was funny because one ewan mcgregor spoke scottish and the other was american!
Not one actor, but
In Battlestar Galactica seven different actors have to do it. …In every other scene.
Irène Jacob – La Double vie de Véronique
Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh – Single White female
Masahiro Motoki – Sôseiji aka Gemini
Michael Paré as Chris and Craig Brandt in “Killing Streets”.
Franka Potente as Iris and Siri in “Blueprint”. I realise the characters are clones (mother and daughter) and not twins, but I still feel it fits the subject.
Bette Davis – A Stolen Life
Ricky, apparently Armie Hammer did not play both Winklevoss twins in The Social Network. Josh Pence played one of them from the neck down. After filming they erased his face and put Armie Hammers face on his body. Hammer did all the acting…Pence got no credit although three quarters of him was on camera as much as Hammer was……it’s just weird…

Leonardo di Caprio – The Man in the Iron Mask
Schizopolis counts doesn’t it?
Wow, this thread just proved very timely after going to finally see THE SOCIAL NETWORK tonight. Great, amazing element of the movie. Thanks for the article NOHEA.
edit: didn’t understand the topic……..
Man, the effects in DEAD RINGERS are really quite good.
What about Deep Roy playing EVERY oompa loompa in T. Burton CHARLIE & THE CHOC. FACTORY? That was pretty clever.
And non-twins Gary & Martin Kemp as twins in THE KRAYS…that was more creepy than clever.
One example of an actress playing twins….
Lina Romay in DORIANA GREY (Jess Franco, 1976)
Van Damme has played twins twice, past and future versions of himself once and an original and cloned version of himself once. This has to be some kind of record.
Ben Simington
Possible spoiler:
Just watched MOON this week without knowing anything about it. Was pleasantly surprised to find Rockwell acting against himself in some scenes.
Coincidentally, next movie in the queue is DEAD RINGERS. Which brings me to the topic: which movies can you cite in which a single actor performs two roles that regularly have to act against each other (clones, twins, dopplegängers), either through movie-magic montage or special effects wizardry?
A uniquely cinematic performance opportunity.
