Movies you hated that everyone else loves

The Big Lebowski has funny parts , but as a whole , and what apparently has become a “go to” movie for 25 year olds, I think that movie blows a hard one. It’s very , very repetitive and we’ve seen the same jokes done a million times. I think I’m the only one who still holds this opinion , and don’t kill me for it , I understand it’s funny , but there is damn dolls they sell in the mall of the big lebowski characters. For the record , Little Miss Sunshine is a pile.

also wow to people that don’t like There Will Be Blood , I’m sure you’re the ones going to see chronicles of narnia for the matinee and the night time flick.

Sekzee, this thread is for “movies you hated that everyone else loves” so I think it’s incredibly uncalled for (and yes, quite snobbish) to use this thread to bash my taste. At no point did I make the claim that they’re not great films, only that I didn’t like them… which is what I thought we were doing here. I’m not the only person in this thread who didn’t like TWBB and my dislike for LTROI, as I mentioned before, was a personal dissatisfaction. Some of my favorite films are purely aesthetic so I find it especially funny that you think that I’m searching for some deep meaning. Nope, I just didn’t enjoy watching them. Believe it or not, it’s okay for us to have different opinions about film and GASP even okay for me to not like something that is widely regarded as being a great film. (As, once again, is the point of this thread.)

I am well aware that Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction aren’t comedies, “not funny at all” was intended for Knocked Up. My apologies for not being clear. And, I happen to love Brazil so clearly our taste in movies is just not compatible. Which is fine. I know the internet is super awesome because you can be tactless without having to show your face but perhaps read the title and content of the thread before bashing the last person to post.

I thought Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was boring and bland, not scary, thrilling, or disturbing in any way. And I love disturbing horror films.

Elephant. Extremely self-serving and pretentious. By Not Making A Statement, Van Sant has communicated nothing. “These things happen”—we knew that already.

The Big Lebowski- I’m generally a fan of the Coens, but I just can’t stand this film.

Into the Wild- I’m not sure I took pleasure at his death like one person on here, but I do agree that it’s impossible for me to feel sorry for him, and it seemed like that’s what Mr. Penn wanted, which I feel is the wrong direction. I don’t think protagonists have to be likable, but this film played on the emotions you felt for the character, who I found smug, self-righteous, and stupid.

Donnie Darko- When people graduate from college, they’ll realize this movie is stupid.

Dogville- Oh my god, I hated this movie, but I think it’s because I’m a theatre director. I found the whole thing very derivative and spiteful. LVT and I have a very tumultuous relationship in the fact that I think he as a person is one of the most colossal pricks on the planet, but basically I think he’s a good director, this film and Manderlay excepted.

Many more, I’m sure, but I don’t really enjoy talking about movies I hated, I’d rather talk about ones I loved.

o i wasnt “bashing” you i was just merely trying to uncover the reason why you, and a few others, werent impacted the same way most of us were. I happen to be interested in the idea of people having different opinions on films. I obviously picked the wrong thread for this because now i c how it could be taken the wrong way. Sory if i came across negative, honestly i wouldnt have left a comment if you would have listed a few films that i agreed with haha

This is probably the easiest thread on the Auteurs to list:

-Star Wars Trilogy
-Lord of the Rings Trilogy
-Harry Potter series

I’m implying “everyone” means regular Joe Schmo and not people on the Auteurs?

Easy Rider- I’ve watched this film on my own twice and once in a film history class. I’ve tried giving it a chance but ultimately I fail to see what all the commotion is about.

Star Wars

I grew up reading all the science fiction I could get my hands on (Heinlein/Asimov/Zelazny/Silverberg/Dick/Anderson/etc.) and was really looking forward to Star Wars when it came out. On watching I found it a cheesy version of science fiction cliche with all-too-obvious special effects. I couldn’t understand how this movie became SO popular.

I still don’t care for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Peter Jackson’s first films are guilty pleasures but I cannot stand the trilogy!

“Amelie” – this is the one French film nearly everyone has seen, attractive young women especially; and I cannot stand it! And it’s always her favorite movie! This cloying, design-y, French confection makes me give up on ever finding a woman I can watch movies with… so sad:(

I have to say I don’t understand all the Juno-bashing. Ellen Page is a very interesting actress to watch and listen to. I also like actor Michael Cera for the same reason – both are non-glamour actors with strong character-actor appeal. I would like to see more movies with actors like them. In addition to excellent performances from the entire cast, Juno was also a smart, funny story …so, what’s the beef? The only problem I had was that I got tired of that song in a big hurry!

My only problem with Michael Cerra is that he is not expanding his range, unlike, I feel, Ellen Page. He just needs to be in more films that actually take more acting than he’s done in his films. I tend to like him in those movies, no doubt, because they suit him, but I would like to see what else he could do.

And, yes, Jonu gets a lot of undeserved bashing. By the way, though, Robert, I agree a bit with what you say on Amelie. The girls I know who have seen it all adore it and consider Jean-Pierre Juneut the grand master of filmmaking (kind of). Now, I do like the film quite a lot, but it is not the greatest film ever made. It is, though, a joyous one.

2046… It’s not even a film by itself. Beautiful cinematography, nice sets and costumes and a touch of cinematical doesn’t necessarily equal to good filmmaking…

Moolaadé.. I can’t tolerate any kind of social awareness in cinema if it’s so poorly and primitively executed…

Z… I don’t like this kind of in-your-face storytelling…

The House of Mirth… Unconvincing at many points and plan boring, may I say…

this could go on like this…

Before Sunrise was an impersonal load of wank. I still don’t understand why people consider it one of the most romantic films, it’s just another Richard Linklater puppet show. Having said that, I do like both Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, they’re exceptional actors in their own rights.

Juno has already been mentioned here several times… with good reason, I think. Everything about that film bugs me… very artificial. I’m surprised De Palma’s Scarface is remembered so fondly too. I can understand its impact at the time, but is it really one of the best films of the eighties?

Just had a discussion with a mate on the subject… thought of plenty more. Most of them I didn’t intensely dislike, just that I don’t think they deserve acclaim. I realise a lot of these have already been brought up , just felt I should add my votes:

All About My Mother
The Departed
Life Is Beautiful
Lost In Translation
The Shawshank Redemption
Forrest Gump
Akira
