There Will Be Blood, by P.T. Anderson…most of my friends can’t stand it, I don’t know why…I think it’s one of the most powerful films I’ve ever seen. Daniel Day-Lewis is of course an amazing actor, and Robert Elswit’s cinematography makes the film look like it has been sitting on a shelf in an empty warehouse for a century.
Also, call me crazy, but I actually liked The Brown Bunny by Vincent Gallo (the shorter version that he released after it bombed at Cannes). I thought Gallo’s performance was impressive; it was such a monumentally different role from Billy Brown in Buffalo ’66, but I think he was able to play both very convincingly.
“Faust: Love of the Damned” (2001) – as far as I know, everyone in the world hates it. I love it though.
“Turistas” (2006) – as far as I know (again), I’m one of the few who love it.
That’s about it. There are some other films, although there aren’t as widely hated as those two films and of course, I don’t love most of them.
BLUES IN THE NIGHT (1941)
Everyone I show it to hates it. I feel completely alone on this one.
Happy Gilmore
Also Crash (2004) [I wouldn’t say “loved,” rather I don’t find it intolerable. I admire its dialogue.]
I really like Garden State despite it being an easy target for haters.
I love Joe versus the Volcano, despite it being hated by critics and shunned by audiences. It’s still Tom Hanks’ best movie, Meg Ryan’s, too. Also, I never get tired of watching The Rules of Attraction and consider it my favorite movie about college.
Who doesn’t like HAPPY GILMORE? What could be more audience friendly? It’s a nice movie.
Stealing Harvard with Jason Lee and Tom Green.
My sister recently began to doubt my film taste because I quite liked Quantum of Solace… but what can I say I have a thing for clean efficient brutal violence… that and dark skinned Ukrainian girls.
POINT BREAK and TERMINAL VELOCITY….could it be the sky-diving?
POINT BREAK and TERMINAL VELOCITY….could it be the sky-diving?
I agree with Garden State. People just want to hate on Zach Braff and I do kinda feel guilty for liking it cause of him, but you know what? It’s a solid film. Not great and definitely not the voice of a generation, but it’s just a feel good movie that everyone can relate to. I like to watch it when I’m feeling lazy or depressed. Also I love the film Thumbsucker. I don’t know why but I could watch it anytime, anywhere. Seriously, it’s like one of my favorite films of all time. I can’t help it. It chose me.
ishtar. that’s right, i said it.
I saw ‘The Spirit’ last night in the theater – people were restless, walking out, booing, my date hated it. Yet the very things that make it a “bad movie” – terrible pacing, bad dialogue, ludicrous characters, an emphasis on style over substance, a make-it-up-as-you-go-plot – were the things that made me love it. Has anyone out there actually read a comic book?
‘Iron Man’ was sanitized in to a bland, formulaic action film. ‘The Spirit’ is something entirely more interesting – it’s a film directed as if it were a comic serial, a string of episodes of varying quality and coherence pushed together, with all the rough edges and weird logic that make superhero books a joy to read in the first place. It’s a failure, sure, but it represents the work of an outsider trying to rethink how films are structured, and that makes it a joy to watch.
Anyway, the sight of Samuel L. Jackson wearing a Nazi uniform and raving about eggs made me double-over with laughter. Here’s to the birth of a cult film.
Your friends hate Blues in the Night, Rich Uncle? I don’t hold as much admiration as you, but it’s a definite conversation piece – an unlikely leading man, Betty Field at her hissable best, those great Don Siegal montages. Lloyd Nolan with hair . . . and what’s not to like about Elia Kazan on clarinet?!?!??
Cafe lumiere , I love the quiteness in this film, somebody think it ’s good sleeping tablet.
Red Dawn. It actually takes some time to develop the characters and doesn’t end on a feel-good note.
My friends, as well as most folks here at theauteurs would like to kill me for liking these, I’m sure -
White Men Can’t Jump.
Dirty Harry/ Death Wish series. Vigilante justice does work!
i love Unbreakable by M. Night Shyamalan, and even his The Village and The Happening. I also like Galaxy Quest and Crash (2004) ;)
The Paradine Case (hitchcock)
Deep Blue Sea, haha. No, seriously.
Speed Racer. I honestly don’t know why people hate it.
Vertigo. Hitchcock’s great, though.
Uhhh woops! I thought this was the “Films you hate but everyone loves” thread…
The recent movie The Happening. And I agree with Speed Racer. Anyone who hates Vertigo should be watched carefully.
Oh – I just saw the listing on Quantum of Solace. The director blew it totally by going with the “artsy”, hopefully short lived, trend of queasy-cam filming with unstable camera and rapid cuts so you can’t tell what’s happening at all. Sure am glad Casino Royale used the camera right so you could appreciate the splendid action and beautifully choreographed fights with the only Bond who comes close to Connery – Daniel Craig.
Very carefully . . . and from a distance.
Hahaha, that’s cruel.
Salo, people love to hate it.. or hate to love it.
David
I’m switching the topic around from a different board, but the question begs to be asked. What Movie DoYou Like That Everyone Else Hates?
For me its Suspiria Directed By Dario Argento all my friends hate it, but I totally love it. The candy colors, brutal murders and, campy dialouge(sp) really call to me.
