I didn’t hate Vertigo, but didn’t see what all the fuss was about.
I love The Frighteners, but most people I know can’t stand it for some reason. Oh well, more for me.
Sorry Eli, I was just trying to be funny. I often fail at being funny, damn! As long as you didn’t hate “Vertigo” then all is well. But really, you didn’t like “Vertigo”?
No, no I wasn’t offended laughing emoticon. It’s not even that I thought it was a bad film, I just have a tendency to overestimate films with so much praise and then get let down and dislike it more than I would if I had no expectations, bad habit.
I find Vertigo to have its place, but to be overrated. As far as the topic:
Miami Vice — for the visual aesthetic.
The Passion of the Christ — because it’s still a powerful film (if violent and hard to watch).
Showgirls! Also Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and De Palma films in general, specifically Body Double and Raising Cain.
Two films that I have enjoyed, while those near me have not, are Fitzcarraldo and Last Year at Marienbad.
Julien Donkey-Boy. I think it’s beautiful.
People around you don’t like Fitzcarraldo or Last year at Marienbad? Terrible, those films are gems.
It was about 20 Years ago, but I still remember it exactly. Wednesdays we have a ‘sneak preview’ of upcoming movies in one of our theatres. You never know what film will be shown. One day they showed Tim Burton’s ‘Beetlejuice’ and I liked it very much. Michael Keaton and Alec Baldwin act really great and the whole movie is so funny. On the weekend I invited some friends to watch it. After the show all of them asked me to give them the money back. Of course I didn’t, but until now ‘Beetlejuice’ and my bad taste is a running joke when talking about cinema.
Michael H. – Beetleuice is one of the funniest movies ever and I still thinl it is Micheal Keaton’s and a young Winona Ryder’s best roles (or certainly funniest) yet. I love the special effects in the afterlife – the waiting room sequence with the ridiculous numbers, etc., etc. I catch bits and pieces of it whenever it is on – always with renewed enjoyment. Get some new, less snobbish friends! Peter M – same thing applies – the people near you have no taste – get someone else near you! Oh well, we can all identify, I am sure…
I love Salo…beautifully shot and mysterious. Salo is not nearly as trashy as people make it out to be.
Total Recall
Demons and Demons 2
Mister Lonely
Lost Highway
Inland Empire
White Dog
Funny Games – BOTH versions
I’ve learned Haneke isn’t for everyone….
I don’t hate Salo, I respect it, but I don’t think I’ll ever watch it again.
KDR – When saying both versions are you referring to Clockwork Orange?
=O.
Bryan Singer’s Superman. Bad Boys 2. And yes this will certainly anger people…Episode I,II and III. For my own reasons too long to share here. I too loved Speed Racer. As a narrative film there were lots of things that simply don’t work. But as a pure piece of Pop Art…it’s fucking brilliant.
I love “Glengarry Glen Ross”. My wife hates it, her sister hates it (we had a huge fight one night after I showed it to her), and all our female friends hate it. See a trend?
Several of my (male) work colleagues have whole segments memorized, on the other hand. As do I. Gender-wise, a very polarizing film, as is “Clockwork Orange.”
“You see this watch?….”
Wing Commander. Yep. I love it. I love to love it. And don’t judge me because of it.
Total Recall
Showgirls
Pretty much anything Verhoven does in Hollywood.
&
Armageddon (despite the existence of fire in space & Bruce Willis being fatherly to Ben Affleck)
Big Trouble in Little China
Demolition Man – pretty sure I can quote it all the way through.
Unbreakable was great too.
Oh and two years ago everyone seemed taken aback that I thought United 93 was the best movie of the year… but hell, it was.
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
Lost in Translation
The Life Aquatic
Harold and Maude
Fried Green Tomatoes
MYSTERY MEN is a movie I watched dozens of times when I was younger, to the point that I can quote most of the movie verbatim and find it far more hilarious than anyone else I know.
THE FOUNTAIN is one of my all-time favorite movies but of course, we all know how that one went down.
HOOK, another remnant of my childhood. Perhaps I simply can’t remove my nostalgia for this film but I absolutely adore it.
A lot of people give Jackson’s KING KONG shit, but I enjoyed it so much despite its length.
I tend to be a supporter of most Spielberg, actually. He gets so much shit from the arthouse crowd for being too commercial but MUNICH was a really powerful film in my book, and AI ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE was the perfect blend of his and Kubrick’s sensibilities.
Unbreakable
The Village
HOOK! YES!! good lord what nostalgia. its so absurdly bad though, watching it now. but when Pan first crows in Rufio’s face, thats some wonderful sh*t
Most of my friends can’t stand Van Sant’s Last Days, and I can’t either, but it’s one of those movies I can watch over and over and always be interested for reasons beyond my understanding.
Claus: As a fan of Glengarry Glen Ross (it is my favourite Mamet movie), I think you bring up a very interesting point. Perhaps we should look into gender-bias when considering why a film we like is disliked by others. I will try the experiment of watching it with my wife and see what happens. If we get into a fight, it’s all your fault! Good call on Clockwork Orange, too. Now we need a separate thread for movies our girlfriends (or boyfriends) hated that we liked, to see if this gender thing applies to a lot of other films. I think you are on to something. Maybe we have found an equivalent to watching sports, here.
Keagan Brooks
Total Recall! I love that movie.
“See you at the party Richter!”
