MUBI World Cup 2012?

Jerry Johnson

For every “discovery” film, there will be far more familiar films, and that simply means that those are the films likely to appear in the tournament.

Riss can correct me, but I believe he’s going to apply a “Fans” cap on the films that can be nominated so as to prevent the overly-familiar (for example, if a film has more than 100 Mubi fans, then it’s ineligible).

And I’m just dying to know what Greg’s excuse not to participate is. You submit a list of films and then you watch some films. That’s it.

If any such Cup is to be started within this year, as long as i’m muzzled, NONE should choose any of the following countries or films from the following countries: Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Serbia, FYROM Macedonia and Greece aka the Balkans of which I was the last manager.

if anyone disagrees with this, i’ll contradict to it since i originally had an idea of getting this started in a much simpler way and i’d also suggest Risselada to minimize the number of films NOT allowed in a future Cup, WC or GC or whatever. my suggestion on that topic would have been simpler: eliminate films which have appeared more than once, not all of them.

why? because at least more than half of our participants appreciated Sansho the Bailiff and Cleo from 5 to 7 in 2 out of 3 Cups as opposed to Farewell to the Ark and Wanderers of the Desert, films which appeared only once and would benefit a lot more this time around.

in other words: allow all films BUT the ones which have appeared more than once.

Heh. My excuse is merely that I don’t want to commit to anything since I’m not sure whether or not I’d have time to invest in it fully. I don’t want to begin something I wouldn’t finish or to “make” people watch movies I like if I’m not going to be able to watch theirs since that doesn’t seem right. Part of the problem is with getting a hold of many of the movies being put forward as I don’t tend to like watching movies online if I can avoid it and even if that wasn’t the case, the way the links were provided in the last couple of events tended to make it less involving for me, although I also understand the reasons for presenting them in that manner. Besides, from what I can gather, I tend towards liking a lot of movies that aren’t going to be as enjoyed by others on here, and that being the case, there is no real good reason to subject others to them in place of some they’d prefer. The association of melodrama and camp being particularly at issue in that regard. Plus, selfishly, why add films I already like to a list when not doing so would give me more to potentially find out about?

Because, selfishly, you submitting a list will cut down on the number of shitty films I have to watch for this cup. Stop thinking about yourself, Greg- think about me.

I hope there will be a director limitation. I would hate to see three films from one country all from the one director.

Tommy

I was thinking that same thing Kuxa

Probably wouldn’t affect the big countries. But I could see a Finnish team for example being dominated by Kaurismaki. I think if three films are chosen for each country then there should be a one film, one director rule.

This is a good idea, unless the slots need to be backfilled at some point because there are no other suggestions.

Ah, I must have missed Riss’s reply to Max (which Max later re-posted), but the rules make a lot more sense to me now. I had (and perhaps still have, but to a smaller degree) some of the same apprehensions as Blue and Kuxa; for example, I can’t help but think that the list of three Indian films we’ll end up with after the preliminary voting will perhaps include one Satyajit Ray film, which would be an utter waste of a slot (more so considering that a ridiculous 7 of the 21 Indian films from the earlier event were his films). But at least the impact the number of votes will have on the inclusion of a film is minimal, so that’s good.

If there are particular films or directors you don’t want in it you can certainly petition people to not use them. Or you can submit your own list with other films from those countries at the top of your list and it’s a better chance you’ll get your film instead….

There may be some follow up and extra rounds necessary. I’m prepared for this.

you know, this 1000 fan limit is giving me grave reservations à la blue&greg.

people are going to be sensible about this, aren’t they? only submitting films whose country’s cinema they’re familiar with enough to know that the film they’ve submitted represents it well enough? for instance…i watched an amazingly delicious korean film the other day that i’d hop up and down about on here if i could – drifting island – but since i’ve only seen probably a handful of korean films from that rich period…..i’m not putting it on my list to riss because i don’t feel qualified enough to mention korea – i’ll leave that to blue and clockworkdaisyblues and others, like people who posted in this thread….and i’m looking to this world cup to increase my knowledge of korean cinema. which, since megaupload went boom is going to be harder (anyone want to hit me up with under the sky of seoul ?)

or….as an example, a country for which i’d consider myself merely an adoring but attentive dilettante – poland. unless you could off the top of your head reel off the names of…say…25 polish directors, i’d think you couldn’t even call yourself ‘aware’ of polish cinema, let alone ‘almost familiar’ let alone an expert – which would probably literally require another language, subs being a lot lacking in a lot of cases. for other countries that threshold probably varies for size, availability etc…something like italy…all the fingers and toes ticked off in awareness wouldn’t be enough….whereas somewhere like azerbaijan, i could probably pick my nose.

now that i’ve thought more seriously about it (a biro and paper got involved)…..my list i’m submitting to riss won’t even hit near 10 countries, and the more i think about it the shorter it gets.

since this is a competition after all, there should be this tension between seeing a film you love get some attention and a showcase for a country’s cinema. but i’m worried this tension will just end up being a big squash…..(and i’ll make a small plea here for people not to forget the usual forgotten – early stuff, animation, shorts, etc)….

That’s ridiculous- there are no country cinema experts participating in this Cup. If there were, they would have already published a book (or at least articles) on the subject.

did i say there were experts? i just said that i know they know way more than me. but you should watch drifting island.

but you should watch drifting island.

Then submit it! It only has four fans. Isn’t that what this Cup is all about?

I think this might be a problem only if you put this near the top of your list. But it’d still make sense to include it, if only in 10th place or so, because the only way it will end up being part of the final list is if at most two Korean films appear in the top 9 of all of the lists submitted (and in that case, we’d rather have Drifting Island than no 3rd Korean film at all). This might not happen with Korea of course, as there are enough people on the board with sufficient exposure to its cinema, but in general, it seems to me that a better idea would be to just include personal, lesser-known favorites on the lists which one feels deserve greater exposure rather than leaving it to the “experts” who might not exist for all countries.

I agree about the fan limit number though…1000 is just too big. I like 100 better.

twodeadmagpies

alright! it’s going on my list at the bottom then. but i was kind of hoping some lee man-hee or something would get there first (or even road to the racetrack. damn megaupload) so i could see ‘em. still. i have a suspicion that there’ll be quite a few kim ki duks and park chan wooks higher placed than mine :(

Poor, poor Jerry, still living in a universal bubble of certainties prevailing over knowledge? If you have any idea whatsoever about Greek cinema, be my guest and do pick and post any such film you deem to find “excellent”. One doesn’t have to be an expert “author” or “prestige” scholar to be knowledgeable in a general field of thought. You as a programmer should know it better than many children around here.

“But I don’t like Greek cinema.”

Have you seen enough Greek films to say so? If you have (which I highly doubt you have also seen the right ones), I question your open-mindedness.

I saw the Harvey Keitel one. Oh yeah, and the one about that fat chick’s wedding.

Sally, don’t get yourself too worked up about it. I would say if you saw a film that you sincerely loved a lot and you feel like it would be a wonderful discovery for many people here, then I would list it, even if you don’t know that much about other films from that country.

@ Sally,

You are more of an “expert” on cinema than most on here. Please include all films you’d like to see in the Cup in your submission! We’ll be better off for it. :)

From everything I’m seeing come in so far and the way everyone else is talking here, I think the list that is going to have the least percentage of new discoveries on it is my list!!!

Brentos

i’m confused, where do i submit the films i’d like to see in the cup?

also, i would still like to volunteer to help manage a country, but i understand if everyone’s got it all covered.

Uli³Cain

Brentos, send a PM to Riss with a list of films including director, country of origin and year

It’s gonna suck to have to boil it down to just one single submission per country! But I’ll keep an open mind and do my submission and see what comes out of this process.

I reckon that we get just one shot at it, right, Riss? I can’t modify my submissions list once I send it to you, correct?

Blue, if you send me a list and then have second thoughts before the deadline on January 28 you can send me a PM to modify it. That’s no problem.
