Nine pages tallied and 3 days until HG Wells’ birthday, so members keep submitting a list of 10 of your Favorite film characters of all time.
Remember — no need to place in order as there will be no extra points for being the top choice, just total numbers. Please no Honorable Mention, just 10 to ease the tally. Please list the CHARACTER’S name first.
Emily, any chance you have the character names?
Scottie, it’s cool, I don’t mind ties, just the lack of lists.
I ran it for two months and had a little over 150 lists, so the results are looking good here. Looking forward to the final list :)
Kenji Watanbe (Wantanbe-San) / Takashi Shimura / Ikiru
Lucien Lacombe / Pierre Blaise / Lacombe, Lucien
Don Lope de Aguirre/ Klaus Kinski / Aguirre The Wrath of God
Luberjack / Misael Saavedra / La Libertad
Jef Costello / Alain Delon / Le Samourai
Freddie Quell / Joaquin Phoenix / The Master
Father Nazario (Nazarin) / Francisco Rabal / Nazarin
Ana / Ana Torrent / The Spirit of the Beehive
Jacques / Guillaume des Fortes / Four Nights of a Dreamer
Harry Lime / Orson Wells / The Third Man
The problem, Scottie and Uli, isn’t that enough people are participating but your methodology. If you don’t want ties, you need to make it a points system like the Village Voice music poll. As hard as it is to get a good sample of movies, characters are far more difficult since there are half a dozen or more characters per movie to consider. To get a good sample size, you need people to contribute twice as many characters and to add at least a little ranking in there.
Ranking isn’t needed, lists are needed. 1,000 lists would be a good start.
But at the same time, I like the HUGE difference ’tween what this list will look like and what the Empire list looks like.

I don’t have many favorite film characters, but a particularly dirty, old man, played by one of the maddest personalities in all of cinema, is one of few. Among other things, I learnt a most valuable life lesson from him — the best way to ignore voices of shouting women is to listen to your favorite football team score a goal on radio. So here’s my list of size one.
1. João de Deus — João César Monteiro (Recollections of the Yellow House)

Uli: That’s true- it’s not so much the ranking, but what actually gets selected. I thought that the Greatest Films Poll results were totally unique- perhaps what the S&S poll will look like in 30 years or so.
O-O
Ollie — Oliver Hardy
Stanley — Stan Laurel
Harold Bissonette — WC Fields It’s a Gift
Barney Sloane — Frank Sinatra Young at Heart
Mothra — Mothra
Violeta — Ninón Sevilla Victimas del pecado
Manuela — Judy Garland The Pirate
Lucienne Garnier — Louise Brooks Prix de Beaute
Ossi — Ossi Oswalda The Doll
Fanny Hawthorne — Estelle Brody HIndle Wakes
chalked up

So, about 34 hours and 53 minutes to go
under 30 hours
20:45 to go, this is fun
