is that really the cover? i reckon there are people here who could do a lot better :D
Yeah, it’s really the cover. It’s in the style of the old soul and R&B concert posters:

That’s a great cover. Never heard of the movie, but Jaramusch intrigues me and I can’t say no to Tom Waits.
Not a real big fan of this movie. I loved the Japanese story but after that, nothing. Strange because i do like Jamursch, yet i’m not crazy about his 80’s films at all really, which is supposedly his best period.
This is my 2nd fav next to Down By Law from him. Pre-ordered it the day they put it up.
Great film. The link between “The Killing” and “Pulp Fiction”. Though I don’t consider it to be top-tier Jarmusch. It’s somewhere on his second level.
I’ll be happy if Criterion releases all of Jarmusch’s films.
… and Screamin Jay as the wise receptionist, and Joe Strummer in anthology pissing scene! Wonderful!
Screamin’ Jay Hawkins was the best part of this movie. For all the interesting pieces, Mystery Train didn’t really come together in my mind. Left me with a bit of an empty feeling, unlike Stranger Than Paradise and Down By Law, which I thought were truly great films. Cover is great though.
My favorite Jarmusch and it has ‘world peoples’ in it, so it shouldn’t be culturally whined about.
‘world peoples’ in it"
Jarmusch is amazing but i bet he’d kick the balls of whoever said that……it wasn’t even an irony to begin with…
good morning D ….. you’re not whining about it and that is a good morning for you
HOOOOORAY! Another Jarmush double dip. I will happily oblige.
How about some Satyajit Ray or somebody good?
@ Jason- oh, c’mon, that’s just being unfair!
Write to criterion :-)
The most stupid cover of all Criterion Collection! They must have kept the original French poster!!
We need a thread specifically geared toward complaints about cover art.
@Georges First of all, please do not use exclamation marks if your point is weak. If you have an opinion please respect others’ opinions as well.
Second of all……….What? “They must have kept the original French poster”….That’s the least french poster I’ve seen. It’s meant to mimic posters like those of 1950s America.
Example:
@Matt You should start one.
@Matt You should start one—
Me?—no no no—I have no interest in doing so . . . but it seems many other here do, so . . .
Actually, as perhaps I did not make clear above in posting the style of poster the cover is imitating, I think this is one of the better Criterion covers.
agreed.
I love the cover too. The movie is not quite Jarmusch at his best, but it does have numerous rather wonderful bits.
Banana Nut
I’m so excited. I hope Jarmusch answered my questions.
Great Cover too!
