I’m going out on a limb and saying Stars Wars, because I’m so fucking tired of anime and its pasty aficionados.
^ what the hell does that even mean?
Before this is discussed, could you please offer some points of comparison, so I know why on earth these two movies are being pitted against one another.
^ hah right, i prefer Barton Fink ;)
Nausicaa. Nothing to discuss.
Well, from a purely personal preference point of view, I’ll take Empire Strikes Back, but I still fail to see what these two films have in common that they need to be in a match against one another.
“I’m going out on a limb and saying Stars Wars, because I’m so fucking tired of anime and its pasty aficionados.”
pointless and arrogant comment…
“pointless and arrogant comment…”
coming from the humble community…
“because I’m so fucking tired of anime and its pasty aficionados.”
yes,for that is a very humble,expressive and objective comment…and open-minded for sure!!!
A tough and weird versus thread, but I’m gonna go with a tie.
“Well, from a purely personal preference point of view, I’ll take Empire Strikes Back, but I still fail to see what these two films have in common that they need to be in a match against one another.”
Two fantasy/adventure/sci-fi pictures with strong mythological underpinnings from the 1980s… two of the best films ever made….gee, they are totally unalike.
Now choose!!
“Two fantasy/adventure/sci-fi pictures with strong mythological underpinnings from the 1980s… two of the best films ever made….gee, they are totally unalike.”
There may be surface similarities but Dune might go better with ESB. Or Star Wars vs. LOTR. Nausicaa just seems mostly unrelated.
Let’s do The Seventh Seal Vs. The Matrix instead.
No.
“There may be surface similarities but Dune might go better with ESB. Or Star Wars vs. LOTR. Nausicaa just seems mostly unrelated.”
The only thing unrelated is animation vs live action. Otherwise, Nausicaa is very similar to the Star Wars OT.
Boy, this is a catty thread, isn’t it?
Did I go through some kind of digital wormhole and into an Aint-it-cool forum?
Tom, I’m not seeing it. Could you describe some of the similarities in greater detail than “fantasy/adventure/sci-fi pictures with strong mythological underpinnings from the 1980s?” That is a bit broad.
I’m voting for The Seventh Seal.
Seventh Seal > Matrix
Tokyo Story > Hostel
The Rules of the Game > Bad Boys 2
whoa whoa whoa…i think we are getting a little carried away here. I think Tom has a decent point about the relationship between the two films. You dont have to destroy his thread because you dont agree that the films are similar.
Okay, then can someone who sees the similarity explain it?
i think he already did. Anytime you compare an animated film with a live action film it will be seem urelated. And sure what Tom said is broad but they are broad films, they cant be confined to small neuances or we would have a never ending list.
Ok, no more snaky remarks from me. Everyone discuss.
^ on that note, well…i havent seen Nausicaa so…i cant really say ;) Its the only Miyazaki film i havent seen/own. I will purchase it as soon as I can find a copy that is less than $30!!
Nausicaa is probably my “favorite” film ever. Either that, or Empire Strikes Back. Thus… this thread. :) I wanted to see what others thought.
I’m not saying these films are the best ever made. I’m saying that I enjoy them the best, and they are my favorites.
The similarities are almost endless. Lord Yupa is very similar to Obi Wan, for example. Nausicaa is similar to Luke, and so on.
I vote for the glorious two part epic Ivan the Terrible.
Bruce, you lose.
Yet another thread claiming a film is one’s favorite, but not the best. I’m sorry, but I don’t see the distinction. If a film is your favorite, it’s the best film ever made. Only one person can give something that label. You.
Seems to me like it’s just a way for someone to rationalize why they love a movie (that is not widely acclaimed) so much. This is my favorite movie, but it’s not what I really think is good.
Oh, and to answer the question. The Empire Strikes Back for me.
Well, it’s possible to enjoy something that you know objectively is not the “best.” It’s the difference between my favorite rock song and the “best” piece of music ever written, probably from by Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner, etc. Even if something is your favorite, you can detach yourself from it enough to know that it is probably not objectively the finest example of its particular art form in the history of the world.
