Network vs. Dog Day Afternoon: Sidney Lumet in the 70's

So I watched Dog Day Afternoon and Network over the last few days and I was wondering what everyone else thinks is the better film.

Personally, I’m kind of torn for many reasons that span all spectrums of each film. The performances in Network are good across the board, especially Peter Finch and William Holden but Pacino and Cazale are at their best in Dog Day Afternoon. I think the script for Network, written by Paddy Chayefsky, is one of the best scripts written. Not to say Dog Day Afternoon’s script isn’t a solid one but the plot in Network alone is good enough to make it noteworthy, everything else aside.

In terms of Lumet’s direction, I really like how he makes use of the sweltering city and the locale of the bank to maximum potential. Network has great set design, especially that of the Howard Beale Show. I really can’t decide which one, in terms of direction, is the better one. I like both of them a lot, all things considered and think they are both great films that have influenced modern film and filmmakers across the board.
