New Blade Runner

i read on CNN that there’s going to be a Blade Runner sequel… or possibly prequel. that was all the information in the article.
i imagine it’s going to be hideous. CGI would ruin the whole thing.

link?

Not the first; there already has been a book sequel to Blade Runner and the movie Soldier (1998) is also considered to be a semi-sequel.

CGI would ruin the whole thing
It’s a bad idea to begin with, so I doubt that CGI will either save or ruin the thing.

Any writers or cast attached/rumored?

Here’s a link to a different article.
Looks like this has only gone as far as the acquisition of the rights to make a sequel or prequel, nothing more. I don’t know how I feel about this.

Thanks for the link, Alex!

And the CNN article.

“We have long-term goals for the franchise, and are exploring multi-platform concepts, not just limiting ourselves to one medium.” Uh-oh.

Edit: Apparently this is the team that brought us “Dude, Where’s My Car?” So I really have nothing to worry about after all.

Edit #2: I was wrong about “Dude, Where’s My Car?” But check out these gems.

They just want to turn it into some multi-platform product. Total hacks.

So, new Blade Runner is to Blade Runner as the Star Wars cartoon is to Star Wars.

I thought Battlestar Galactica was the Blade Runner prequel.

Hollywood has been sinking in the stupid remake/prequel/sequel trend for some years now. Therefore, “Blade Runner” can also be fodder for big studio junk. Whatever comes out of there, the original film will remanin unscathed.

You’re absolutely right, Carlos.

I totally agree with you Carlos , however , “True Grit” from its critical and popular perception I think it broke the rule and became one of the very few remakes that reached the original movie’s greatness and quality if not succeeded it and that is a good and optimistic thing …… who knows? , might we see another remake better the original?!!

Remakes aren’t always bad. But, for the remake to be good it has to have it’s own unique interpretation of the story and characters. Remakes only intended to capitalize on the popularity of the original are always terrible, because they always skimp on the creative staff, thinking people will watch it just based on the brand.

Ridley Scott has toyed with the idea apparently over the years but ultimately never felt comfortable with material to make a sequel. This is NOT the context I feel comfortable with though. Bud Yorkin is also responsible for a lot of the trouble and issues that was cause in production to begin with that happened with Blade Runner.

Ridley Scott’s revisiting of the “Alien” universe in his upcoming epic “Prometheus” has obviously inspired the helmer who intends to give a similar treatment to his other seminal sci-fi classic – 1982’s “Blade Runner”.

Deadline reports that Scott is committing to both direct and produce a “new installment of Blade Runner” for Alcon Entertainment.

At this point it’s unclear how this will relate – will it be a sequel, a prequel or something more akin to a tangential project ala “Prometheus” – set on the same futuristic Earth filled with Replicants and Blade Runners but revolving around entirely different characters.

Warner Bros-based financing and production company Alcon secured the franchise rights to the property back in March in a deal which very specifically stated they could essentially do what they wanted with the exception of one thing – they could NOT remake the original. Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove will produce.

Things are still in early stages with no script yet locked which means it could go in all sorts of directions for the moment. “Prometheus” famously began as a prequel before morphing into a kind of ‘cousin’ to the original “Alien”.

They’ve confirmed it.
I can’t believe the audacity these people have to ruin this classic film, sheer audacity. If I were president, these people behind this project would be charged with treason or something for destroying a great American artwork
