Way behind on this one, but nice. It will probably be mediocre, but I, too, am hopeful—even in bad Carpenter movies, there is something worthwhile, and sometimes that something elevates the entire piece.

Huh. Images don’t look so promising. I’ll still see it. Think it will get a wide release?

My favorite was “Memoirs of an Invisible Man.” JK

That photo above of the girl in the skull makeup is so cliche it’s silly. Hopefully the film is better than the “been-there-done-that” special effects we get a glimpse of. I am looking forward to it, and will likely dish out my hard-earned 10 bucks because he’s John Carpenter.

I agree with In the Mouth of Madness being his last decent film. I also love to put on Prince of Darkness every year at Halloween, along with the original Halloween, even though POD is now dates.

in the mouth of madness kicks ass!!

did you hear that they’re finally releasing his Elvis biopic starring Kurt Russel?

though, i read that in a british magazine, so maybe it will only be region 2….
i’ll go look that up

why do i have a feeling this ward is going to either go straight to dvd or have a limited theatrical release at best?

as for carpenter’s last good movie, i enjoyed Escape From L.A in a so bad it’s good kind of way, and that was kind of intentional anyway, and ‘Vampires’ has its moments. ‘Ghosts From Mars’ was dire though.

Hmm . . . so this is a period film set in a psychiatric hospital where “there is something more sinister going on inside The Ward than just patients going crazy?”

His episode of Masters of Horror on Showtime, Cigarette Burns, was excellent. It was an original story that was creepy, weird and gory. The other episode he directed, Pro-Life (with Ron Perlman) was also very strong and effective.

I’m a huge John Carpenter fan (he’s quite possibly my favourite filmmaker) so The Ward is definitely the film event of the year for me. However it looks like I may have to wait until 2011 for a UK release. I’m pretty sure that it will get the usual lousy reviews each new Carpenter effort gets, regardless of whether or not it’s actually any good. His later work is really underrated. Even though they are not amongst his best movies I really enjoyed Escape From L.A., Vampires and Ghosts of Mars. They are the kind of hugely entertaining genre films that Hollywood is almost completely incapable of making these days.

Besides the two Masters of Horror episodes in 2005/6 he’s been inactive since he finished Ghosts of Mars in 2001 which is a great shame. It looked for a while as though he may have retired from filmmaking. I really hope The Ward is successful and encourages Carpenter to continue and make more films in future.

another Carpenter film is on the way from darkhorizons.com:

John Carpenter (“Halloween,” “The Thing”) has signed on to direct a film adaptation of the comic “Darkchylde” reports STYD.

The story follows Ariel Chylde, an ordinary Southern teenager cursed to transform into the creatures from her various nightmares and act out her deepest, darkest impulses.

WETA workshop will provide the effects. The comic itself was a major sensation in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, scoring major acclaim and outselling many major titles.

has The ward even found a distributor yet??

I haven’t heard of it getting one. The Dark Chylde things seems dodgy, too:

The Ward was written by a college friend of mine. Pretty psyched for him, no matter how the film turns out.

I guess I have a controversial reply, but I never saw what most see in Carpenter. The Thing was the best he had to offer, and I enjoyed it’s ability to tell a story, effectively use prosthetic effects and create atmosphere. That’s all I ever got out of him… don’t really care about what he’s churning out next. :S

Haven’t seen all of his films but my favorites are Halloween and The Thing in that order, and I think Christine is underrated.
