Below is the email from Criterion in case anyone missed it:

Dear Criterion collectors,

Our three least favorite initials: OOP. Since we launched the Criterion Collection more than twenty-five years ago, we’ve endeavored to keep everything we’ve published in print. But despite our efforts to renew rights, we are losing a large group of titles from StudioCanal at the end of March, and we wanted to give you advance notice that our editions will be going out of print. Until we’re out of stock, we will be offering these titles at an additional $5 off on our website. The titles are going to Lionsgate, and we don’t know when they may be rereleased. As ever, we will continue to try to relicense the films so that they can rejoin the collection sometime in the future.

Here are the titles that will soon be out of print:

Alphaville
Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy (Eclipse Series 6)
Le corbeau
Coup de torchon
Diary of a Country Priest
The Fallen Idol
Forbidden Games (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Gervaise (Essential Art House edition)
Grand Illusion (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Le jour se lève (Essential Art House edition)
Last Holiday (Essential Art House edition)
Mayerling (Essential Art House edition)
The Orphic Trilogy
Peeping Tom
Pierrot le fou (DVD and Blu-ray editions)
Port of Shadows
Quai des Orfèvres
The Small Back Room
The Tales of Hoffmann (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Trafic
Le trou
Variety Lights (Essential Art House edition)
The White Sheik

Take note: this may be your last chance to pick up spine number 1 from the collection.

Happy viewing!

Oopyman, they put NO ENGLISH SUBS on those DVDS!? How in the hell, man! It seems like Lionsgate always just wants to piss off consumers of good films. What in the eff?

This whole thing make me very sad. I need to get my Pierrot Bluray soon, because, while the DVD is great, it would just look immaculate on Blu. Also, I need The Orphic Trilogy, Diary of a Country Priest, Le Corbeau, The Tales of Hoffman, Trafic, Peeping Tom, and Fallen Idol.

And Trafic just came out, too! :O

That’s quite a list. Thanks Studio Canal, you dicks. Can’t wait to see what Lionsgate does with Pierrot le Fou. But thanks for the warning, Criterion. I had been thinking about grabbing the Orphic Trilogy for a while now.

OOPYMAN: Criterion never released “Ran” or “Le Mepris” on Blu-ray. StudioCanal/Lionsgate is released “Ran” and “Le Mepris”

Glad I bought most of these already…whoo!

The five titles that will definitely jack up in price for OOP:

Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy (Eclipse Series 6)
Gervaise (Essential Art House edition)
Le jour se lève (Essential Art House edition)
Last Holiday (Essential Art House edition)
Mayerling (Essential Art House edition)

Why? Not many people bought that Eclipse Series above. Many Criterion owners do not purchased Essential Arthouse releases esp. since many were re-releases. These four titles were not released in the Criterion Collection. Too bad the deepdiscount.com sale is over…these were $7.99 each I believe. or $10 and $7.99 during the BN.com sale. I expect Essential Arthouse vol. 4 to jack up in price. Note: These were sold separately but hopefully you can still get them cheap before people jack the prices up.

Fuck. I’ve got Pierrot Le Fou on DVD.

If I had the $$$$ I’d buy Grand Illusion, Diary of a Country Priest, and perhaps Alphaville. Alas, I have no cash.

We’ll see come the end of March….

ALSO FUCK YOU LIONSGATE

That e-mail almost made me cry when I received it. This had to happen when I have only $30 to my name.

Oh well.

Wow…looks like a lot people took advantage of the sale….a lot of titles are backordered.

Matt Parks

Yeah, I ordered Peeping Tom as I was posting the email here. I’m sure a lot of others did similar.

@PolarisDiB: i know how you feel… that email bummed me out too.

fortunately, i already own most of them…but did pick up The Fallen Idol (which I watched last night: LOVED IT), also snatched up Trafic, The Small Back Room, Port Of Shadows and Le Corbeau. anxious to watch them.

also picked up an extra copy of Grand Illusion (spine # 1)… am keeping it wrapped. thought i’d save it as a gift for someone who would truly appreciate.

happy shopping and viewing to all! Cheers!
