I have also failed to formally introduce myself. I am an ‘almost finished’ philosophy student with ambitions of writing and film making post college. I have a blog with my same name that is occasionally updated with rants/raves about society and culture. I have a profound love for the arts and it is nice to find a community which seemingly shares the same feelings.

As Park City is my back yard, maybe I’ll see some of you at Sundace. Ciao from Salt Lake City.

I am a 53-year-old federal government worker in the Washington, DC area. I reviewed movies for a local paper back in the early 80’s in my spare time but these days I review jazz and improvised music for Cadence Magazine. I am still a huge film buff though with a lot of respect for all kinds of obscure and niche films as well as the more established classics.

I just wanted to say “thank you” for the site. I’m overwhelmed.
It looks amazing as well.

My name John. I’m a film student. A little o’bit of a late bloomer to film as art. I live in Orlando. Have lived on both sides of the continent. I hope to teach film one day as it’s something of a passion of mine. I believe that cinema has more than entertainment to offer to audiences. It can educate, enlighten, inform, and allow us to observe. If I had to pick a particular era of film I would choose the Hollywood 50’s and European 60’s.

Klaus Capra

My name is Klaus, I’m a musician, and my biggest inspiration is film. My introduction to cinema was Vivre sa Vie about 3 years ago, and I have been hooked ever since, and self educating myself in international film history. My desk at work is well adorned with “weird movie” lobby cards and stills, my coworkers don’t understand why I watch black and white subtitled movies, when I could easily watch Kill Bill. I’m really excited about this, and I can’t wait to explore the site more. Thanks for creating this great community filled with people with discerning taste, I look forward to refreshing forum pages and watching great movies!

I’m Miranda from North Carolina. I got interested in film more seriously when I took a film class in college in Atlanta (I have a degree in English lit. and now I’m training to be a Medical Laboratory Technologist, go figure). Cache and Picnic at Hanging Rock totally blew my mind. Not to mention I had a music professor from Shreveport that played Stranger Than Paradise for us in class and now Jim Jarmusch is probably my favorite director. Now that I’m back in NC and have too much free time, I watch and talk about movies here and milk Netflix for all it’s worth.

John

The name is John. Currently a student at Towson University just outside of Baltimore. Majoring in history but I love to annoy my teachers by writing history papers involving film. Watching The Thin Red Line was the movie that got me really into… films as an art and not just entertainment. I take film classes when I can and just started a neat organization on campus… Hello everyone

Matthew

My name is Matthew and I live in England. I’m at university at the moment so I keep moving from home to university to home…and back again. I’ve been a member for about a week so I apologise for taking my time to introduce myself. I’m just a big fan of film (I’ve never taken film classes or made a film). I hope to learn a lot more from all of you so I can enrich my cinematic experience, for which I’d like to thank you all in advance.

The site is superb and I hope I get to talk with all of you in the forums. Feel free to add me if you wish.

Thanks.

Greetings and salutations, I’m Dustin. Born and raised in Alberta, Canada, currently residing in Edmonton. Obviously I’m a big film buff, or I wouldn’t be here. Took a film class a few years back during a brief stint in college and now am constantly juggling the notion of going back for that purpose. Until then I’m fairly lucky in that I have co-workers that I can actually talk to about movies.

Hi, I am an engineer, I am 24 years old and I live in Mexico. I love cinema as an art. I started loving art films at the age 18 when I saw the cinema of Andrei Tarkovsky, then I have been discovering great beautifull works of art. I love the cinema of Yasujiro Ozu and Robert Bresson. I am a cinephile who expends most of his time watching arthouse and classic films. I am also a Criterions Collector.

Hello everyone, I’m another Canadian, from Toronto, where I had the good fortune to be able to grow up watching good films of all decades on a TVO (our version of PBS), program called Saturday Night At The Movies, hosted by Elwy Yost, (who’s son, Graham, wrote Speed and a few other films). When I got an e-mail recently announcing Criterion’s 40% off sale, I thought I could finally afford to buy a copy of The Ruling Class and replace the faded VHS copy I stumbled upon years ago. Ended up ordering Naked, The Third Man, Robocop and the 3-DVD set of Brazil as well. Found this site, made a few posts, met a couple of great people and thought I’d finally introduce myself. Great site, love Criterion and very nice to meet you all. Cheers everybody!

I live in CA. The first auteur that got my attention was John Hughes when I was in 7th grade. If I am ever asked, “What led you to cinema?” I’d say, “John Hughes. Not Truffaut, not the Godfather, not Orson Welles. John Hughes.”

As much as I feel exhilarated every time I see a new great film, I’m also overwhelmed when I continually add to the list of those I haven’t. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ll die, pen in hand, my face resting on a list of films, only some of which are obscured by slash marks. But then I’ve come to terms with what this can represent about life – for me – in a larger sense. I don’t know that I want to live to wait, with everything fulfilled and accomplished. But we’ll see. I’m extremely happy websites like this, as well as companies like Criterion have the same uninhibited love for film that their fans do. I’ll be the first to admit that I probably can’t keep up with an academic conversation on esoteric concepts, but I do hope to reach that critical point as a film watcher. And, as I’ve thought to myself many times, it’s a hard thing to do alone. So I’m glad to be here!

Is there a definitive date when the criterion festivals will end? The November one is still up, so I’m not sure what exactly will go down.

Glad to meet everyone. I arrived here via Criterion like many of you. I hope there is no ageism here, just film lovers. I think my life changed irrevocably when I saw Chaplin’s Modern Times on a big screen in 1972. God save the Village Green.

Greetings everyone from Oakland CA…I’m a 21 year old filmmaker, musician, photographer, and all around lover of art…I thought I was the only one who locked myself in my room during my youth, watching French New Wave films, wondering why most of my friends didn’t like them, for once I’m glad to be wrong.

Kim Nall

I’m a university student from Texas, Communications major with a minor in Theatre. I guess you could say I’m an aspiring actress of sorts. I’ve done local theatre, but I’m still trying to break into film. I also haven’t had a movie night with a friend in years, since no one I know wants to read subtitles. =)

Nate the Movie Mate

Hi there. I’m Nate and I’m only 17. I’ve been watching films since I was about 12 years old. I love Kubrick more than any director. I found out about this site through Criterion’s new site. Nice place. Love the free flicks. See ya around.

I’m a teenager from Ohio with way too much time on his hands. When not watching films, I like to write poetry and blare folk-rock out of my stereo. Nice to meet you all!

Susan M

Hello everyone – I’m Susan from Los Angeles, CA. I want to introduce myself, so I’m going to post the bio that I used for my profile page. Here it is:
A night owl since childhood, movies have given me a place to go when everyone else is asleep.
Film has been an important influence for me as far back as I can remember. It became an obsession from very early on – at age 5 or 6 -when a certain t.v. network would play movies featuring certain actors everyday of the week sometimes, and my sister and I would watch “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and “Hans Christian Anderson” every single night during the Danny Kaye weeks, completely enthralled. By 8, I was a full-blown movie maniac, into the MGM classics -especially the ones with Gene Kelly, and anything I could catch on late night tv. Then at 10, I went through a Paul Newman movie phase followed by an obsession with The Godfather. After I saw a premiere screening of Apocalypse Now at the Cinerama Dome with my dad when I was 14, it was all over – complete movie euphoria, and has been like that ever since. Wong Kar-Wai’s Happy Together, Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Samourai, and Stanley Tucci’s Big Night are some of my many “favorite” films – but I love so many of them, it’s ridiculous to limit them to a few “favorites.”

I live in Los Angles, teach English to foreign students – mostly Japanese, and I tutor part time. My other passions are music, books, and food. I’ve been vegetarian for 22 years, and a vegan for the last four. Coffee is not only my drink of choice, it is what enables me to function as a normal person during normal hours. (As with many of you, I’m a night owl and keep vampire hours at the expense of my health and job punctuality…) I own over 1000 dvds, which is probably not that many compared to most people in this forum, but budget concerns keep me from buying more. My Criterion dvd collection is sadly lacking – only about 50, several of which are nice box sets though. Because of the limited funds, I choose each one with a lot of thought and deliberation – it’s painful at times. Some were given to me as gifts from my movie angel sister. I’m not accustomed to writing about myself on the internet or in general, but I gladly do it here because I’m so happy and relieved to have found this place to commune with other crazy film lovers.

Hello,
Sorry I was a little late to see this thread! I can’t tell you how happy I am to finally have a place to nerd out about film, I have been trying to have intelligent discussions about film on various other forums and have had very little luck. This forum immediately feels like home!

I am Ted (Edward ie Edouard) and I am a 22 year old Film Studies student at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. I am obsessed with film and am excited to really get into it on this board! so there if you want to know anything else about me feel free to check my profile.
