Nigerian Films?

Lee

Hey so I recently learned a stat a while ago that Nigeria is the second highest producer of films in the world. India being first and the US being third. I was wondering if there any great films to come from this country?

Nollywood is fascinating but I think “great” is not the right term to describe anything coming out of it. Sort of defies notions of quality from what I’ve seen.

And I remember us having a moderately-sized thread on it. Try to dig that up if you want more info.

Hey guys I’m a Nigerian living in the U.S. Ari is probably right: the movies aren’t “great” in the best sense of the word but some like Diamond Ring (1 & 2), Violated, Rattle Snake, Living in Bondage are very good and could be considered classics and were indeed made during the “golden age of Nollywood” (late 1980s – late 1990s in my opinion). I was fascinated by these movies growing up. But these days I’m more consumed by Godard and Tarkovsky and Apichatpong although once in a while I like to enjoy a decently made Nollywood film. The industry has tremendous potential and talent but it needs better investment (budget) and refinement (cinematography, editing, e.t.c) to be up to par with the better part of Hollywood.
