Oldboy remake - Good idea or sacrilege

Mathias Palmberg

Most of you out there probably know by now that Hollywood in its infinite wisdom snatched the rights to Chan Wook Parks masterpiece Oldboy a couple of years ago. The remake has been on its way for years but now it seems to be closer than it ever has been. Not only is it a piss poor idea to mess with perfection, but to make Steven Spielberg the director and cast Will Smith in the leading role doesn´t make it a whole lot better. The only saving grace of this project is that the idea is to base the american version on the japanese manga that was the source material for Parks movie. In that way Hollywood will probably water it down and make it PG-13 feature with a bunch of crappy sequels. However, I´m keeping my fingers crossed that Smith and Spielberg don´t get the thing off the ground.

But If you HAD TO remake this movie in Hollywood I would want to see someone like David Fincher handle it. As protagonist Oh-Daesu I would put my money on someone like Russel Crowe, Viggo Mortenson or Paddy Considine and as bad guy
Woo-Jin I would like to see some Hollywood pretty boy like Tom Cruise, Ethan Hawke or Jude Law.

What are your thoughts on this suppossed remake and who would you cast in your Hollywood dream version of Oldboy?

Personally, I wish the original had never been made.

sacrilege, because I don’t find the original exciting either.
Also there was a unceremonial rip-off made in India and as expected it sucked.

India is wonderful place because of it’s unceremonial rip-off’s. The upcoming Bollywood remake of Casablanca, Ezham Mudra, has been on my must-see list since it was announced. The song ‘As Time Goes By’ is being replaced with ‘Hello’ by Lionel Richie, which sounds so amazingly awful that I can’t wait to feast my eyes on it.

As for the Speilberg/Smith re-adaptation of the Oldboy comic book, I really don’t care. Just so long as he doesn’t take the hallway fight scene directly from Chan Wook Park’s film. That’s the type of shot that should only belong to the man crazy enough to pull it off. A signature shot, if you will.

I think it will be about as good as “Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors”.

But I agree with Brandon Bedaw, Speilberg can’t just rip off that signature scene from Oldboy, or he’ll look like a hack. Other than that, it will be a typical “english remake” along the lines of “The Ring” movies, except it will be way less violent since Speilberg/Smith are attached.

I think the saying “if its not broken, then don’t fix it” applies to this film. It was done perfectly by Chan Wook Park, leave it alone and don’t turn it into Hollywood rehashed crap.

Instead of remaking films, or making prequels, try original ideas. It’s disgusting how many remakes there are.

It’s funny because I head that they are basing the screenplay off of the comics not the Korean movie. The film adaptation of this comic is much better than the source material, I have to say. Having read the comic, it would be in the realm of the pg-13 Will Smith 50 million dollar opening weekend range because all of the stuff that made Chan Wook Parks Oldboy so good is not in the comics. Plus I don’t think Big Willy would be up for cutting his tongue out.

I actually liked the original comic but its completely different then the film. Honestly, I wouldn’t dwell to heavily on the possibility of a remake. My money is on that it will never see the light of day…

I didn’t realize anyone was remaking this. Now I’m violently ill and somewhat furious with rage. Thanks pals!

I am looking forward to it. Just imagining Will Smith drunk in Prison at the beginning makes me laugh out loud. Will Smith!!! Hahaha.

Ryan Estabrooks

I am very weary about this. I hope the “Munich”-version of Spielberg comes out to play, and not the Indiana Jones one for this type of material. It better be as raw as Saving Private Ryan. Otherwise, I’m probably going to hate it

Knowing that this will be a Spielberg/Will Smith collaboration, I hope they don’t turn it into something like Minority Report or I, Robot.. I can only picture Will Smith in a tight suit like in Hancock, not kicking ass like Min Sik Choi. I don’t think I’ll even bother seeing the remake..

I am so looking forward to it! What courage Spielberg and Smith have, nothing is the least bit sacred to them, really admirable….

They’ll probably get rid of the incest twist.

Alvaro

OMG, someone please stop this from happening!! It will be wrong on so many levels. No only the casting, they will also make sure it gets PG rated, which means not only tweaking essential parts of the plot, but also making the action sequences less real. Hope it never happens.

Brandon Bedaw

Well, alvaro, to be fair, Speilberg has shown throughout his career that he has no issues with violence, and in some cases, ultra-violence. In fact, he’s the only filmmaker who’s realistic depictions of mass slaughter have been allowed to be broadcast completely uncensored on American network television.

Even though his and Smith’s version of Oldboy will probably be much more tame than Chan Wook Park’s, it’ll most certainly not be rated PG.

Schindlers List ring any bells? For mainstream it was considered pretty f*cking violent at the time and its something that is regularly screened in K-12.

Oldboy was a masterpiece. Here goes hollywood remaking another great film to appeal to more american audience members, and honestly, I think it’s going to suck. Spielberg, come on. He’s made 1 good film recently, and that’s Munich. He has to get back in the game. This is sad, and I’m honestly starting to be annoyed by Will Smith. I hope the project doesn’t get off the ground, period. Long live Oldboy.
