Opinions on the Ending? (SPOILERS)

I’m especially interested in what people think about the very ending of this film, but please don’t feel like you have to limit your conversation to that. Feel free to talk about anything related to this wonderful film.

Now, I know the very ending of this film is the source of some controversy. (The scene where all the parts of the giant start coming back together). Personally, I didn’t love it, but didn’t find it ruined the impact of what came before. I think there might have been better ways to end it, but I think it would be a worse ending if it just ended with the cheery epilogue of Dean marrying Hogarth’s mom and the statue dedicated to the giant. So I guess my opinions on the ending are kind of neutral, but I still consider it to be the only “iffy” part of a near perfect film. But I know some people consider it to be a huge cop-out, and I would love to hear your opinions on it.

Like I said, don’t hesitate to talk about other parts of the film if you want to, just consider this to be a thread for an all-around discussion of the movie.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen this, so I don’t really remember the ending very well. I’m assuming you’re referring to the fact that we see the Iron Giant being reassembled? I don’t remember feeling like this was a problem. I suppose people feel like this was a cheap happy ending? I didn’t feel that way. I liked the film, btw.

Yeah, I’m talking about the very last moment when the giant is shown with all the stray pieces coming towards him and then his eyes turn on again. I’ve read a lot of reviews of it, and a lot of people said that it lessened the impact of the sacrifice that the giant made.

I sort of like the ending, if I recall correctly, or I had a neutral response.

I think it would have had a much greater impact if they just showed the screw trying to get out as opposed to all the pieces rolling to the rendezvous point.
