OSCAR POLL: All About Eve vs Sunset Boulevard:

MUBI user Danny Bailey started a thread concerning which Oscar “best pictures” did not deserve to win.. which brings us to the 1950 Oscars. I have heard many times that Sunset Boulevard should have won over All About Eve for best picture (the great Born Yesterday was also nominated, but had no chance against those two heavy weights…) So I thought we could settle this. This probably should not be a 1950 poll ( a great year for films), but more an A or B poll. Also- this is not a Best Director Poll. This is 1/100th as interesting as Polaris’s recent poll, but for people with “movie voting” withdrawal, here is your temporary feeble fix.

I don’t think you’re going to find many cinephiles that don’t prefer Sunset Boulevard to All About Eve, but unlike a number of Best Picture winners of the 50’s (The Greatest Show on Earth, Around the World in 80 Days), Eve win is no travesty as has many fine qualities of its own. But its it’s up against top quality Wilder here.

@Brad S. – I think Wilder is a great great director. I just think that the character of Eve is so interesting and the performance of Bette Davis’s is one of the best of classic Hollywood. I’m not crazy about most of Holden’s scenes with Nancy Olson, but the movie is so good that doesn’t matter.

A quick troll for the road: – Blvd. (and Wilder in general) is/are beyond overrated.

How sad is it that I haven’t seen either of these films.

But my sense is that All About Eve is the more beloved film. Hasn’t this film been the one serious competitor to Citizen Kane in various polls and surveys? It seems like I’ve heard several organizations list All About Eve as the best of all time (let alone best of 1950). As for Sunset Blvd, it’s not even considered Wilder’s best (is it?).

Again though, I’m pissing in the wind here since I haven’t seen either film.
