@ Ruby – I believe they do show both of these films in film school.
I think I just “missed that day”. lol
you were a very bad boy, i can tell ^
I love how these films that came out over 60 years ago are just as hotly debated as they were during their initial Oscar campaign. I plan on revisiting All About Eve soon, but I did just watch Sunset Boulevard for the fourth time, and yeah that’s one of the all time greatest films ever made.
Sunset 14
Eve 8
lol
I think you can tell a lot about a person based on where they fall on this one.

The more discerning critic will surely vote for me and All About Eve.

Not on your life, darling
Two terrific scripts by two highly talented writer/directors. Great acting in both, some iconic quotes (esp. from All About Eve), both about the darker side of acting/Hollywood, so a close call.
All About Eve +2
Sunset Boulevard -1
I mean, a vote for Eve.
Sunset 14
Eve 9

Clinched by Monroe’s smile

This is really, really tough. I think on a pure filmmaking level, Sunset is a stronger film than Eve, but on a level of pure enjoyment, Eve wins hands down. It’s just so delicious!
All About Eve +1
the tally:
SUNSET 14
EVE 10
It’s such a difficult thing to decide on. I thought both films were powerful masterpieces that portray women at crucial moments in their lives, but I think Sunset Blvd. was a tad better because it showed a very convincing portrayal of how being a has-been can take a toll on a person’s psychological stage, while All about eve dealt with rivalry, and very convincingly as well . I wish both films tied at the Oscars for Best Picture, and that Bette Davis and Gloria Swanson tied for Best Actrress as well instead of Judy Holliday.
I agree with those that said Eve holds up better in repeated viewings and that while Sunset is technically stronger than Eve, Eve is more enjoyable. Eve for me.
SUNSET BLVD. 15
ALL ABOUT EVE 11
The best performance from both films is Davis’s by a long shot. The better film is “Sunset Boulevard.” I think time has decided.
although both films were great, Sunset Blvd all the way
SUNSET BLVD 17
ALL ABOUT EVE 11
Huge fan of both, but only one is a masterpiece.
+1 for SUNSET BLVD.
Sunset. Such a tough choice.
Another vote for Sunset.
SUNSET BLVD. 20
ALL ABOUT EVE 11
Wow, I figured that Sunset would run away with this with a much bigger margin. My take away is that it is time to revisit Eve. Great poll question, 2+2.
Make that SUNSET 21 and EVE 11, I forgot to type in the tally
Ok, I’ve now seen both of these films. I saw All About Eve about a month ago and Sunset Blvd. tonight. I really enjoyed All About Eve and thought it had great performances, particularly from Bette Davis.
But if I had to choose, my vote goes to Sunset Blvd.. It’s just so great. I love Billy Wilder and how his films do not age at all. Having seen three of his films over the past couple months (I rewatched The Apartment and Some Like It Hot), it’s amazing to me how sharp his dialogue is. Such a brilliant filmmaker.
+1 for Sunset Blvd.
Sunset Boulevard is iconic and how can I vote against anything that gives Erich Von Stroheim another chance?
Except that Eve has possibly the greatest single cast of any film of its time, impeccable witty dialogue, a classic final shot and a really nice structure. Bette Davis (One of the greatest actresses) gives her crowning achievement here and she’s matched (Possibly surpassed) by George Sanders as the meanest of all bastards (That you actually root for).
Boulevard has 2 weaknesses that bother me: narration from a dead guy (A matter of taste…it’s just silly to me) and Wilder’s good girl, bad girl hangups. A repeat of the same thing he did with women in Double Indemnity. If it had been paired down to JUST Swanson, Holden and Von Stroheim, I might have voted differently.
+1 for Eve.
+1 for Sunset Blvd. :)
Two great films, but I prefer All About Eve.
OK, the poll is up to:
23 SUNSET
13 ALL ABOUT EVE
Ooooh, tough decision. Two remarkable scripts. But as a movie person, I have to sway just a little more towards Sunset than Broadway.
Sunset 24
Eve 13
Sunset Boulevard
OK, the poll is up to:
Sunset 25
Eve 13
I am bumping this here thread because of the other sunset thread…
Sunset Boulevard!
All About Eve
ok…
Sunset 26
All About Eve 14
Jirin
All About Eve
Sunset 13
Eve 8
After my first viewings I would have gone with Sunset by a mile, but Eve holds up a bit better in repeated viewings. Two fantastic films though. Seeing Eve’s behavior at the beginning when you know better what she’s up to casts a whole new layer of beauty onto it.
