Other Great Suicide Scenes?

Mário Coelho

The attempted suicide scene in this movie with Luke Wilson is the best sequence in the all movie.

What are other memorable suicide scenes you’ve seen?

Girl, Interrupted. Definitely my favorite scene in the movie, love how the Ryder character and the Jolie character play together in that bit.

can someone fucking edit the title of this thread? there’s already even been a complaint by someone who’s had the film spoiled for him

NIGHTSHIFT

The thread title is self-explanatory enough, don’t you think?
No one’s pointing a gun to anybody’s head to view this thread (no pun intended).

How do I even edit the title?

holy fuck, opening this thread is like stepping onto a minefield

@mario
you can’t edit the thread title. a moderator can, i believe… (someone please correct me if i’m wrong)

@nightshit
“The thread title is self-explanatory enough, don’t you think?

except that the spoiler is right in the title, DUH. and, worst of all, if someone is planning on viewing THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, perhaps they will first check out mubi’s page for the flick, only to be struck by the glaring forum topic “OTHER GREAT SUICIDE SCENES?”

like, i’m not waxing on some academic “oh, there are technically spoilers up in this” shit; someone has already stated that the subject of this thread has spoiled the film for them

Maurice Benichou in CACHE.
The Schober family in THE SEVENTH CONTINENT. (This one has to be one of the longest suicide scenes I’ve witnessed in a film.)

Mário Coelho

The Schoeber family suicide is excruciating to watch!

Jason Melanson

It definitely is excruciating. I’ve never been able to return to this film for a second viewing although I do think it’s a great film.

Mário Coelho

I wasn’t that much of a fan of the movie overall, but the last part (the suicide) is amazingly done in a bizarre and disturbing way!

Waterloo Sunset

Fiona Shaw in The Black Dahlia

Do movies where characters act strangely reckless for no good reason, leading to their death, count as suicide? Suicide doesn’t have to be intentional to be suicide.

Dan Bayer

It’s not really a spoiler if you don’t know who in the film commits suicide (and in Tenenbaums it could be any number of characters).

So if you’re going to contribute, just post the movie title, don’t post who.

Most of the first ones to come into my head were already mentioned (Girl, Interrupted is really underrated), but I would add The Sixth Sense. That first scene is pretty impactful.

Christopher Walken in The Deer Hunter….I still have horrific chills when I think of it.

Charles Laughton in Spartacus may be the classiest suicide ever.

Mário Coelho

@DAN BAYER: Oh yeah, how could I forgot that powerful scene? Great choice! :D

@JIRIN: I guess it can count!

The Bill Murray suicide montage in Groundhog Day is good for a laugh on a pretty grim theme.
