Our favourite paintings: the great Auteur Gallery

Eli, you locate the image you want, then simply add an exclamation mark on each side (with no gap) of the url, when you put that here. The size should be under 600 pxls if you want it fitting in the box

Eli Goodspeed

So I just cut and past the url into the “reply to topic” here, then put in the exclamation marks?

Kenji

Yes, on either side. Even i, the technophobe computer numbskull managed it, so should be a sinch for someone of your calibre. If there’s a problem with the normal cut and paste, then you’ll have to copy out the url yourself

I didn’t realize my selection would come out so big here. Sorry about that.

I can’t remember now if i’ve done this one already. Domenichino: The Maiden and the Unicorn. (see also Rilke poem in poetry thread) Who doesn’t love unicorns? If they didn’t exist we’d have to invent them

Ah that’s interesting and brings to mind Millet, but i like it as much if not more.

There’s a thread on female directors, and i don’t think i’ve put this great painting over 200 years ago by Marie-Guillemine Benoist (i’ve just mentioned there) on yet:

Kozyndan (sorry, they’re kind of wide):

The Amorous Nudibranchs Paint the Town Red (and Orange and Yellow and Green and Blue and Violet)…

The Household

Flips Shibuya

The Yum-cha Militia (My Mother thought she had SARS, but it turned out to be PMS)

Naze niwatori wa michi wo yokogittanoka?

Portraits From the (Off) Center of The Universe

Domo Arigato Mr. Nakamura

Kozyndan (continued):

Kin-san’s Business Trip

Like Sands Through the Hour Glass…

What’s Next, USA-chan?

Tokyo Otaku Hyper Remix

Wow, now they really are worth scrolling across the full width! Hard to choose a favourite but perhaps Like Sands through the Hour Glass. The shape reminds me a bit of a photo by Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

We just came back from the National Gallery here in DC, and got to see Luis Melendez’ paintings for the first time. Superb still-life works:

Oh well, I tried. I put ! at either end of the [IMG but the pics didn’t post. Pity.

Having studied Art History at University, five have always stood out for me:

The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli

Saturn by Francisco Goya

The Garden of Earthly Delights by Jerome Bosch

The Sistine Chapel paintings by Michelangelo

The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in Sun (1806-1809) by William Blake

And kudos on all the great posts and interesting finds

I hope others dig these, they aren’t anything obscure by any means; I am not well versed in paintings at all, but I love these three.

Edward Hopper – “Night Hawks”

Dali – “Metamorphosis of Narcissus”

Van Gogh – “On The Threshold of Eternity”
