I’m a big fan of Kyffin Williams’ seascapes, he got better with age, a real old master, like the poet R S Thomas, both could be compared to Dreyer-Bergman-Bresson; spare and bleak
Here’s a late 18th century Welsh artist now being appreciated as surprisingly modern

Nohea: I love that Dore.
Vertigo: of course Turner is Britain’s finest painter, one of the very greatest artistic geniuses the country has produced in any medium though the general public may not realise it. That last pic should please Nohea! I used to love going to see his work in the flesh in my teens
ohh yeah, love Turner’s Vesuvius … posted it a while ago on the volcano gallery thread.

Ah Grimshaw was an atmospheric artist, born Leeds, i used to live at Headingley as a student, so good to see it here. That picture makes me think of so many walks to and from the pubs in the spooky wintry dark
@ Nohea, oh yes, ARC is a superb site and i’m half with them on realism v modern abstract and conceptual art, (Tracey Emin is a joke v most artists on the site), but i think they’re a bit too dismissive of some of the qualities of modern art, and politically it’s reactionary so at times i’ve felt a bit uncomfortable with that. Bouguereau is the main artist championed, and rightly on technical grounds but i think he’s being a bit overrated too.
Great work by Kassan.
Richard Dadd: The Fairyfeller’s Masterstroke
Dadd was another artist incarcerated with mental health problems, i can’t remember if i’ve posted this already
