he’s a junkie!
who is a junkie? how’d you come across that?
This is just one of the many projects that may or may not happen. Who knows? Ferrara and St. John had a falling out. They’ve known each other since like forever. Crazy family behavior, you know. Too bad. They are good together.

I hope this happens
Is this based on a book and if so is it available in an english translation?
Whats the story with this?
Can somebody fill me in?
Also is this Pericle Il Nero a book? If so how Can i get it and is it only in Italian?
Ugh Michael Pitt?! Awful!
Does anyone know if GoGo Tales is ever going to surface? Has it actually been released outside the US?
There is a region 2 Italian import that is available.
I haven’t seen it but I heard the Go Go Tales is awful and it’s probably a good thing it’s had a limited release.
Go Go Tales isn’t awful, but it isn’t anything remarkable either.
Michael Pitt is wonderful.
is Pericle il Nero an Italian novel?, that Ferrara wants to do?
I believe so. Anyways in the past few years Ferrara’s had a few projects lined up and then fall apart. He had The Last Crew lined up with Michael Pitt, followed by Jekyll and Hyde with Forrest Whitaker and 50 Cent, which looked like it was ready to happen, but seems to have entered a state of limbo, with Whitaker dropping off the film and 50 Cent still attached. He had also begun shooting “Game of Death” with Wesley Snipes, but was fired off the project.
He then had a project called “Carmilla: The Homecoming”(http://www.mediafusiondc.com/Carmilla.html) with Mickey Rourke attached. However, Carmilla passed by its March 2010 start date with little to no news on it, which leads me to suspect that it has fallen apart as well. It’s unfortunate, as this one sounds like the Western project Ferrara spoke about at Cannes in 2008.
It was fairly recently announced that Ferrara would direct Miguel Pinero’s play “Short Eyes” for Broadway, but nothing else of the project has developed yet either.

NIck St John and Abel are no longer friends. The details of the fall out are unknown, but the effect on Ferrara’s career has been somewhat devastating, as ‘The Funeral’ was arguably the last truly great movie he made.
Abel is not a thinker. He is an instinctual film maker with a bunch of confused ideas in his mangled head. Like Scorsese, he needs a more cerebral person by his side to make sense of his jumbled thoughts and translate them into a coherent narrative.
Until Abel gets a decent writer, his films will continue to suffer imo.
I disagree. I thought New Rose Hotel and Mary were extrodinary.
Certaintly the thoughts are jumbled…but the films themselves have a more “collage” like feel, which is by no means weaker than the work which he had done with Nick St. John earlier.
^^i liked New rose Hotel and Mary too, but i don’t rate them as his best work. or even close to his best.
I think the collage like feel is just a ruse to hide the fact that he has no coherent thoughts. It’s style over substance. Interesting, for sure, but hardly substantive. except for maybe New Rose Hotel, which is very self aware/reflexive.
“Mary” is my very favoirte of his films to date. Really unusual. And a great cast: Juliette Binoche, Forrest Whittaker, Marion Cotillard, Matthew Modine, Heather Graham. It actually deals with the “New Testaent” in an in-depth way as it zeros in on the dsicarded gospels and establihes the fact tha tMary Magdalene was a disciple. Tje Church turned her into a whote becuase in her gospel Jesus says he is NOT the “Son of God” but simply a teacher.
^^i think it dances around that idea, but doesn’t really deal with it. It’s too caught up in the drab melodrama for it to register. I wish he went with the original idea for Mary, which was about Binoche’s character getting caught up in a Mary cult.
I enjoyed the visual style, but it felt compromised to me. The collage/impressionist style worked for New Rose Hotel and Rxmas but it’s obvious he was aiming for broader appeal with Mary and i think it backfired. It’s a decent film, but overall i felt it could have been better.
Did you like Rxmas? I didn’t love it, but i appreciatedit.
I appreciated RX Mas, I like the scene where the drug dealer goes into his apartment and starts cutting the dope very realistic scene.
I haven’t seen New Rose Hotel, I want to. I just recently saw Fear City and I thought it was cheesy and sleazy, Melanie Griffith shaking her bum a couple of years before she did the same in Body Double. The best thing about Fear City is the on location shooting in Times Square. I feel the movie is severely cut and when you watch the movie, I saw it off IFC, it felt like scenes where missing and murder scenes abruptly cut. Not one of his best movies. The second best thing about the movie is Michael Gazzo from Fingers and the Godfather who owns a strip club on the deuce and is always in some kind of frenzy.
I hear China Girl is his favorite so I will see that. I love the funeral, its one of my favorite gangster movies. From what I saw of Dangerous Game I liked it, yet I only saw a scene that involved Kietal’s wife in the movie and hm returning home to her around Christmas time. I liked the scene though.
Does anyone know when Napoli Napoli Napoli will come out here in the U.S
I wonder what Pericle Il Nero is about? Thanks for the picture.
For all Ferrara fans I just saw a film called Daddy Long Legs and Ferrara has a cameo playing a peddler/stick up man. The film was directed by the Safdie brothers.
The novel is basically an Italian noirish thing about a mob henchman who meets a girl, does something, and thereby runs afoul of his boss . . . or something along those lines.
By the way, I don’t believe this has any relation to King of New. I think the planned prequel fell through, so Ferrara moved on to another project.
^^Matt, you are probably right but i’ve read such conflicting information. Some sites claim that P.I.N is in fact the prequel to King, which doesn’t seem right, and others claim that it’s based on the novel and scheduled to shoot in Naples this year with an Italian and American cast.
Yeah, Joks, the reporting of Ferrara’s projects has been both confused and confusing. There have also been reports of a Jeckyl and Hyde story with 50 Cent and “Game of Death,” a project with Wesley Snipes playing a politician’s bodyguard fighting off assassins.
^^I wonder if that Jeckyl and Hyde project is for real or not. Someone online joked that Forest Whitaker(Jeckyl) will represent the more ‘cultured/intelligent black man’, and Hyde(50 CEnt) will be the ‘ghetto’ side that’s just waiting to get out. heehehee. While i doubt that’s going to be the case here, you know that in Ferrara’s hands it will not be a literal retelling of the classic story.
There was some blog posting back in March reporting that Whittaker wasn’t going to do it, and that’s the last I heard of it. Also, I’d read the Snipes thing has been passed on to Giorgio Serafini.
^^^Not surprising. Ferrara’s career has been in trouble for a while and it’s not getting any easier for him finance projects.
I still remember the days when Abel was knocking out a movie on an annual basis.
Rudy
Does Anyone know anything about the status or anything about “Pericle il Nero” which is a prequel to the 1990 film King of New York (1990) centering on a powerful drug lord’s rise to power in the 1970s.
Why is Nicholas St. John a.k.a Nicky Oliverio not involved with this as a writer
Why hasnt Abel worked with Nicholas…they made gold together.
Michael Pitt as a young Frank White!? how do you all feel about that
Please NO RAPPERS IN THIS…
if anyone could shine some light on this project or any future Abel Ferrara projects I would be thankful.
