Damn! Eddie Coyle is one of the best late-noir, hands down. RIP.
(oh, and Bullitt was cool, too)
His commentary tracks on the Eddie Coyle criterion are enjoyable. Too bad he’s gone.
I’d been thinking about The Friends of Eddie Coyle in the last couple of days. One of the greatest crime movies ever, despite its relative lack of action. The casting was phenomenal. and the care taken to tell the complicated story… Bravo, Mr. Yates. At least your work is immortal.
How are any of Yates’ lesser known films? I’ve only seen and enjoyed the obvious ones (already listed above!).
I screened The Dresser for a course covering Shakespeare on film. That’s a little gem of a film that deserves a bigger and better audience than it has. Albert Finney gives an amazing performance, and Tom Courtenay an exceptional one.
Likewise for his later film, The Run of the Country, again with Finney. Superior little movie.
I’m glad The Friends of Eddie Coyle has and is getting the kind of rediscovery about which I’m referring. Bullitt never lost its since day one.
In that I just read his first film was Summer Holiday, somebody who knows how to post youtube links should do so and we can whistle along with Cliff Richard in honor of the deceased. Good job, Mr. Yates.
I like The Dresser. The House of Carroll Street is sort of interesting. Krull is good stoopid fun. He also directed some of the better episodes of “The Saint.”
And to all the computer aided special effects crew, this is how it’s done old school.
John and Mary, well no one’s perfect.
An Innocent Man is an exciting picture. Selleck was never better and the downfall of a peaceful man is realistically revealed.
Curtian Call is a lovely 180 from Man. Yates had real range.
I’ve seen An Innocent Man but I’m fuzzy on it.
Its been years since I have seen it too
I would like to watch again and do a write up.
David Rasche is scary in the film , an actor that never got his due
Jaspar Lamar Crabb
Sad news…Peter Yates died…he directed some classics: Bullitt; Friends of Eddie Coyle; Breaking Away; The Hot Rock…as well as Mother Jugs & Speed(!)
