Pick my next Angelopolous

I have seen Traveling Players and Reconstruction. I own the first two Artificial Eye sets and the only thing that has stopped me from delving further into it is indecisiveness. Which should I watch next?

I will watch what you recommend, and try to start a discussion.

^^^no!!

watch them in rough chronological order Jirin, then you will understand what most dont: that his filmography is one of the most coherent and planned of all directors.

Was the Weeping Meadow trilogy ever successful? I started the first one the other day…

Weren’t the Travelling Players in Landscape?

I took the appearance of the troupe to be The Travelling Players. ould be wrong though.

Landscape in the Mist is a great introduction to his work. Eternity and a Day is my favorite (so far, I’ve missed a lot), Some people have problems with it because of the long “fictional writer” segment towards the end. I loved it though.

they are in Landscape and their presence is significant but often misunderstood or overlooked.

to really ‘get’ his 80s films after A.T.G, you really need to see his historical films, or at least know some modern Greek history.

the problem with most critical analysis of his work is that the critics just look at the basic symbols disconnected from their social context then have the arrogance to claim that it doesnt matter because all that matters is form.

You mean the scene where that guy is just speaking aloud when a beautiful girl suddenly appears and finishes his sentence? Strange moment…

One my favorite, and least favorite parts, is the long wedding dance celebration. I don’t know why…

Nada, that isn’t the reason some don’t like Eternity and a Day. It’s more simplistic, sentimental and ‘manipulative’ than his earlier films. It’s kind of like Theo’s Wild Strawberries, except it’s nowhere near as good.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s pretty damn strong, but it’s not one of his best. It really impressed me when i first saw it 12 or so years ago, but that’s because i had only seen two of Angelopoulos’ films at that point.

The wedding sequence is pointless in Eternity. it feels tacked on.

The only one of his films that let me cold was The Weeping Meadow. The films just seemed jumbled, inexcusable considering its length. The sons are lost in the shuffle and the jailing of the main character hs no impact. The ending is strong, but would be so much more powerful if we had any sense of who the sons were.

I think that Eternity grabbed me because the politics weren’t the forefront this time. Saw it 10 years ago and I still like it,

^what have you seen of his?

Dust Of Time left me.cold. Weeping Meadow, while flawed, has plenty of things to recommend imo, but it seems his trajectory ended with Eternity as a film maker.

Dust Of Time is not a great.swansong.
