for me, criterion godards are priceless because of the extras. he’s the type of director that extras are made for. hes got so many short and obscure projects, plus his cinema is so intertextual.
if your question is, is it worth it to buy a criterion film versus a regular release of that same film (which is probably cheaper)? to me, no contest. criterion is a cinephiles wet dream.

re: Criterion version of Alphaville, it is an early release so the transfer quality is not the best and the newer releases of the film such as the Optimum version available at amazon uk for about £11 is more preferable:

I own both versions and agree that the Optimum is the better transfer and it also has some worthwhile extras: an introduction by critic and godard scholar Colin McCabe as well as a 28min featurette Alphaville Peripheries and some trailers, the Criterion disc has no extras. So definitely get the Optimum over the Criterion if you are a fan of the film.

I was just wondering – do you think it would be better to get the Criterion DVDs of Godard and have all of the extra features and booklets etc.. or to have the Ultimate Godard 13DVD collection, which I have very little information about?
