It is my first time watching it. Should I watch it with or without “Voices of Light”?

I watched it the first time without. I think that’s probably better first time out, but in either arena the film moved me very much.

Please watch it silent. The damned thing is only available to watch because of a near-miracle, so don’t tarnish it with a soundtrack inspired by (not created for) the film, placed on top of it without Dreyer’s approval. Yes, we’re all guilty of watching silent movies with new soundtracks, but in this case, the director directly stated that he wanted it to be seen silent.

The “Voices of Light” version is valuable when one wants to appreciate “Voices of Light”.

I’ve never seen it with the music. That’s the way the director wanted it, that’s the way I wanna watch it.

Humbly beg to differ—

I’ve seen it both ways, and now I can’t even imagine the film without Voices.

Woah woah woah. The music is absolutely brilliant with it… gives it a whole new level of transcendent beauty.

I can’t fathom watching the film without Voices of Light.

You should just watch it like now because it’s that good.

Watch it with Voices. Best soundtrack for a movie ever.

Dreyer hated musical accompaniment on all his silent films. Watching it without would be watching it with Dreyer’s original vision (also, if possible, running the film at .74 the DVD running speed to get close to the original crank speed would also help).

However, the soundtrack is excellent (I too would nominate it as one of the greatest film scores ever).

Just watch it twice. The first without; the second with.
