Quotes from Dogtooth

There are two tapes. There are Rocky IV and Jaws (Jaws I?), but what about that absurdly disturbing quote (“Do that again, bitch…”). What film is that from?

Anyone think the dance at the end is a “homage” to Flashdance?

It’s definitely from Rocky, the quote you’re talking about, though I think it may be paraphrased/misquoted slightly?

I watched Dogtooth last night. I and my fellow watchers found the movie quotes confusing.

The daughter borrows two videotapes. The dad finds the videos and punishes her. But the daughter quotes or acts out scenes from more than two films.

First Rocky and Jaws, those are easy. Then there’s the “call me Bruce” scene. Then “Do that again, bitch, and I’ll rip your guts out. I swear on my daughter’s life you and your clan won’t last long in this neighborhood.” I have no idea where that’s from. Then the big Flashdance dance at the end.

Are we supposed to assume that the daughter continues borrowing videotapes over many weeks?

Yeah, I assumed that we only see her borrow two videotapes but that it had to have happened on several occasions. I really want to know where Bruce comes from because the scene near the end of the film when the elder daughter has escaped and the family finds out, we see the youngest daughter running through the yard towards the fence/gate yelling for her sister Bruce. That cracked me up.

There is a movie called THEY CALL ME BRUCE (I think that’s what it was called) which was kind of a cheesy spoof on Bruce Lee. Hmmm.

The dance scene is definitely FLASHDANCE.

Bruce is what they called the shark in Jaws

hence the nod in Nemo

Bruce the Shark “I never knew my father!”

@Megg – I read that in the other thread. Somehow I’ve missed this and I’ve seen JAWS a million times. When, in JAWS, do they refer to the shark as Bruce? How have I missed this after all these years?

It was what Spielberg referred to the shark as on set. Bruce is actually the name of his agent or lawyer.

@Soybean Well that is interesting, because I thought that they only nicknamed the mechanical creation Bruce, as in on set….so dunno. I don’t recall it in the film, but many years since I saw it so I took it as read.

Oh, ok. Did VHS tapes have special features? I don’t remember.

I don’t think so.

BRUCE!!!!

I thought of “They Call Me Bruce”, but that’s kinda obscure. Jaws, Rocky, Flashdance are so famous and instantly recognizable.

The Jaws shark was not called “Bruce” in the movie itself, so that doesn’t really work either.

Very few did.
Towards the end of VHS, newer releases sometimes included the same special features as the DVD versions. But most of the time they just had 20 minutes of trailers before the film.
