Ok, what do you all say on behalf of your rankings? Are you still watching 2001? I lost interest in that film long ago and doubt I’ll ever go back to it, so I guess that means that I think it is far from Kubrick’s best. The two that I do keep returning to are Barry Lyndon and Paths of Glory. Lyndon as done fairly well on your lists, but Glory never seem to garner much respect. I keep thinking I ought to see Lolita and The Shining again.
Wow, low love for Spartacus!
I always stick up for that film. It’s not that I necessarily “love” it, but I admire that even as it was rife with so much “big studio” b.s. attached to it, and Kubrick’s woes are now legend and well recorded, he nevertheless managed to pull a very intimate, personal tale out of what could have been a cosmically bad melange.
I also think it’s one of the better epics of that period.

First of all, there’s no “Best to Worst” for me, only “Totally Awesome to Slightly Less Totally Awesome”; he never made a less than great film (unless you count Fear and Desire, which I’ve never seen). Lolita is the only one that doesn’t do much for me, but its still a great film.

Downbylaw: I’ve been wanting to see Paths of Glory quite a bit, I’ll hopefully be seeing it tonight. I’d expect to rank it highly on my list. :)
Good Josh.
Let me know what you think. I’ve always wondered why I seem to be the odd one out in considering it among his very best. I find it to be an interesting story compellingly told. It holds up for me while my youthful enthusiasm for 2001 and Clockwork has faded.
By most accounts, The Seafarers is Kubrick’s worst movie. As the one who first “discovered” it and provided the Library of Congress with a print, I’m one of the few people who’s actually seen it.
As I mentioned on another thread, however, it IS now available on DVD.
I was looking at a desciption of that DVD not long ago. Apparently it has commentaries with Roger Avary and Keith Gordon, which I thought were odd choices.
Downbylaw: It’ll have to wait awhile longer, I didn’t find it at Barnes & Noble as I’d hoped. :(
I’ll still be trying to see it as soon as possible though.
Matt Parks: Avery and Gordon ARE odd choices to do the commentary on The Seafarers and they admit they are right off the bat. They mainly talk about how this short documentary fit into Kubrick’s career and they point out the 5-6 nice shots in it that demonstrate the director’s future talent.
