I saw it twice, the last time about a year ago, and liked it a lot, almost as much as the novel. My ranking isn’t to be taken seriously… ;)

I currently adore:

3. 2001
4. Paths of Glory
5. The Shining

The other 8 I’ve seen are all interesting but haven’t really moved me in a long time.

1. Eyes Wide Shut
2. The Killing
3. Dr. Strangelove or How I learned to Stop Worrying…..
4. 2001: A Space Odyssey
5. Paths of Glory
6. Full Metal Jacket
7. The Shining
8. Barry Lyndon
9. Spartacus
10. Lolita
11. A Clockwork Orange

Most Underrated: Eyes Wide Shut. It suffered from a bad ad campaign but I think this is Kubrick’s most cerebral film. Closely followed by The Killing.

Most Overrated: A Clockwork Orange. Benefits from cult following but lacks serious thematic depth. Average at bet.

Film that LEAST Resembles Kubrick’s vision: Spartacus. It wasn’t his project to begin with. Producer Kirk Douglas called the shots and made an almost mindless 1960s blockbuster.

Film that MOSTLY Resembles Kubrick’s Vision: Dr. Strangelove. Took so many liberties with the original source material. Made his most unique film.

To me, 2001, The Shining, and Dr. Strangelove are all masterpieces of cinema that I can watch again and again – for different reasons. 2001 has always seemed to me the most perfect of all films, as it combines an acute visual style with a mesmerizing, highly metaphysical story. I rate it with the two or three best films I have ever seen. It stunned me when I first saw it, and always moves me no matter how many times I see it. It is at the epitome of film art, for me, in any case.

Kubrick at his best – as these three films surely indicate – put himself at the top of the heap. He, along with the best of Tarkovsky, Bergman, and a few others represents cinematic art at its finest. His close attention to detail is the one constant throughout his brilliant career. I refuse to rate his other films, beyond saying these are my personal favorites. A great film artist and technician with a vision that few possess.

We all agree that Kubrick could churn out the masterpieces. Saying which one is our “most favourite” and which comes in a distant third, or whatever, is fun. And here’s another way of looking at it:

Which of his films, comparing premise with execution, surprises you the most? Take the precis for, say, Barry Lyndon — man rises then falls in social standing. Now compare that to what Kubrick did with it. Okay. Now do that with the rest of his movies; and then rank them. (AKA: which films are most excellently subversive?)

Films Whose Source Material Or Premise Kubrick Totally Blows Out Of The Water In Astounding/Unique Ways:

1. Dr. Strangelove
2. The Shining
3. Eyes Wide Shut
4. Paths of Glory
5. Barry Lyndon
6. 2001: A Space Odyssey
7. The Killing
8. Full Metal Jacket
9. A Clockwork Orange
10. Lolita
11. The other stuff.

Example of rationale: The Shining started as a pulp horror novel with some, perhaps, insight into psychology. Kubrick’s version isn’t scary in the way that King meant it to be, and tells us nothing about why the characters act as they do, but everything about how it feels to live in the Overlook. 2001 is an austere and masterful piece of cinema that can’t really be equalled for what it sets out to do and actually accomplishes. The film is basically just that where “just that” is everything, the universe and more. So in terms of expectations-getting-outraged, it doesn’t betray its premise but is still, don’t get me wrong, so great a film as to deservedly last for a thousand years. (Although readings of the film in, say, 2240 would be fascinating and full of probably charming ridicule, technology-wise.)

I didn’t know “Spartacus” was ever overrated. Isn’t it usually seen as a flawed film, and not really Kubrick’s “pure” vision?

“Full Metal”, on the other hand, is great. Hard to overrate that one. First half of the movie is about as good as narrative filmmaking gets. And perhaps the second half of the movie should qualify in the “most underrated” category.

Ryan Rogers

interesting most of the people think Paths of Glory is overrated and i totally agree, it’s minor Kubrick. And I’m glad to see the love for Eyes Wide Shut.

2. Dr. Strangelove
3. Eyes Wide Shut
4. A Clockwork Orange
