These top 3 are so difficult to order for me, as they are amongst my favorite movies of all time, but #1 changed my perspective on what film could do as a medium. #2 is just an incredibly powerful, cathartic viewing experience, #3 was the film that kick-started my obsession with film.
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
2. A Clockwork Orange
3. Dr. Strangelove
The rest are almost as great, and the only reason I gave some of these films 4/5 stars is that Kubrick films are held to a much higher standard than most other directors’ films.

Out of all the great filmmakers, I think Kubrick is the hardest to rank. His films all contain variying instances of perfection which makes it hard for me, but I will try.
Barry Lyndon
A Clockwork Orange
The Shining
2001
The Killing/Paths of Glory-it’s hard for me not to separate these two. I think they’re both equally great.
Eyes Wide Shut
Full Metal Jacket
Dr. Strangelove
Lolita-only because it’s not my favorie James Mason film.
Spartacus-a great film but Kubrick had no control over it which is the only reason it’s my least favorite.
I own Killers Kiss but i have yet to see it. I’d love to see Fear and Desire and some of his early short documentaries.
The Shining – by a mile
Dr Strangelove
Paths of Glory
2001
Lolita
Full Metal Jacket
The Killing
A Clockwork Orange
Killer’s Kiss
Barry Lyndon/Eyes Wide Shut – two appalling movies that I’ve tried to like but actually despise. I consider myself a Kubrick fan!
Eyes Wide Shut is his best film in my opinion. I love it so much.
3am. Start rererererererewatching EYES WIDE SHUT now? Maybe? Tempted….
I think I will give it another rewatch now too.

8. The Killing
9. Barry Lyndon
10. Eyes Wide Shut
11. Killer’s Kiss
12. 2001: A Space Odyssey
I didn’t see the other films mentioned. I am on the fence concerning if Kubrick was the greatest director of all time. His films are the most perfectly constructed in my opinion, but it’s hard to call him the best when considering such prolific directors as Raoul Walsh or John Ford. I definitely think that 2001 is his weakest film. Pauline Kael said it was Kubrick “masturbating with his camera.” It looks amazing, but gets so pretentious and muddled in the third act that it undermines the first two and tanks.
1. Dr Strangelove
2. The Shining
3. Barry Lyndon
4. A Clockwork Orange
5. 2001: A Space Odyssey
6. Full Metal Jacket

5. The Killing
6. Paths of Glory
7. Full Metal Jacket

9. A Clockwork Orange
10. Lolita
Have not yet seen his other films. The only one I was truly dissatisfied with was Lolita. The other nine are all great films in my opinion, and both #1 and #2 are in my all time top ten as of now. It’s a crime for Dr. Strangelove to be at #8 on any list, but I guess that’s just how highly I regard some of his work. Dr. Strangelove is such a perfect film.

1-5 Love these movies.
6-7 Very good movies that feel like they were on the cusp of greatness but missing one little thing.
8-11 Respect a lot of these movies (in fact I do like Spartacus but I agree this is one feels out of Kubrick’s control) but these films are not my cup of tea.
