“Memory is not the opposite of forgetting but rather its lining.”
Marker on Tarkovsky, but still shows his poetics:
“He told me he had a dream. An angel came to Andrei and said, ‘You will make nine movies.’ Andrei said, ‘Only nine?’ And the angel said, ‘Yes, but they will be very good movies.’ And Andrei smiled and said, ‘That I can accept.’”
Marker made more media than Tarkovsky said but in a sense one could tell the same narrative about him, as like all things Marker its his story and ours too.
He was a horse:
“When we arrive on set, wood fires are burning, and these armor-clad warriors are warming themselves. It’s a great image. They’re standing around in this huge open space. They’re beautiful images, but no one ever films them…”
Or maybe he was just the chronologer of horses…
