Milk 9.0/10.0
ditto “Milk”, 3.5/4
The Mother. 6/10.
It was a small little film. It wasn’t bad, but most of the characters were SO unlikable that it was hard to sympathize with any of them. Not to mention, some of the most awkward sex scenes I have seen in a while. But still, parts of it was really beautiful.
Amarcord
85/100
And I got to see this on the big screen at the Film Forum. Seeing Italian boobs (big Italian boobs, no less) in your face is a sight I’ll never forget!
Bonnie and Clyde
75/100
Faye Dunaway has these cheeks I just want to lick. Film was good too.
Vers le sud (Heading South) – 70/100
Hard to watch only because the behaviour of the characters is maddening — true to life but maddening.
Happy-Go-Lucky 8/10
Not Mike Leigh’s best work, but charming nevertheless. And Sally Hawkins is delightful.
Man on Wire
95/100
When I saw him step foot on the wire, I was literally brought to tears. To see a man strive and persevere to achieve his dream and to SEE that dream, it’s genuinely heartwarming and, I feel, no person can NOT be moved by seeing that. Brilliant brilliant film, exhilirating, thrilling, comedic, sad, romantic, ETCETERA! I can go for days, and by far this is the best documentary and one of the best films I’ve ever witnessed.
Saw Happy Go Lucky today. On a scale of 1 to 5 I would give it a one. This is the first Mike Leigh film I have not liked. Found the main character insufferable.
Thirst (Bergman) – Minor Bergman film, but still very strong. Interesting pre-Altman Altman-esque structure. B+
Paprika (blu-ray) – Pretty decent. Sort of generic anime “weird” imagery. B-
Woman in the Dunes.
10/10
its pretty good
Chasing Ghosts: It’s weird how King of Kong was so big and this movie can’t even get a DVD release. It is probably the better made of the two, King of Kong is just more entertaining due to the drama. 86/100
Mafioso: I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie break so hard from comedy to drama. 90/100
Cat People: I imagine this was a very scary movie in its time. It’s not really my thing, but I can appreciate it. I plan to see Schrader’s remake later this week. 80/100
Frost/Nixon.
I give it a 9.5/10.
Kept my attention, which can be hard to do when making a film on a historical moment that we already know the outcome of. Michael Sheen and Frank Langella were outstanding. I really have no complaints about this movie.
Fukoh – By Takashi Miike.
It is a coming of age story, with gore, sleaze and action, for a yakuza’s son.
9/10
Just saw Slumdog Millionare. I’d give it a 4 out of 5.
Europa: 8/10.
Visually stunning film. Would be sorely lacking without Max von Sydow’s narration.
Lilya 4-Ever – D+
A couple people on here were talking it up this morning, so I gave it a watch. It was pointlessly grim, melodramatic, and utterly cliched. Pointless. All men are assholes, huh? Nice broad brush you got there. Try again- but this time, try to create three-dimensional characters.
The other thing I really want to bitch about would reveal a couple pretty serious spoilers, so I’ll leave it at that.
The only thing that keeps it from the “F-” category is some realistic, well written dialogue and the interesting angel sequences.
I just saw Seven Pounds with Will Smith. Not too bad actually. A bit of stupid dialogue every once in a while though. 3.5/5
Calendar, Atom Egoyan (1993)
60/100
Two films in one: the road trip through Armenia (which is quite fine) — give that an 80; and, back home alone, the photographer in his bleak apartment with the loop of women, wine and telephone calls (the phone on the water cooler) — give that a 40.
Brazil – 5/5
I watched Fanny and Alexander for the first time last night and I would say 3.5/5
LET THE RIGHT ONE IN
I loved this movie.
Eight Miles High. I thought it was very good and the ending was perfect.
I’ve spoken very highly of this film before and just keeps on getting better The Dark Knight 4 out of 4 stars. Kick ass ride!
I agree with you Missy, absoulutely positively, The Dark Knight was an exhilarating ride.
Michael Mann’s Thief
Very cool work by Mann, implicates lots of things about his entire oeuvre (as the first film by a director usually does). Well structured, and also very real. For a film whose subject matter is distant from most viewers, the characters (and therefore performances) are so textured and three dimensional that you can’t help but feel that you’ve bumped into one or two on the street on the way to the theater. As a longtime fan of Michael Mann, it was quite enjoyable to see his roots.
The Machinist – 3/4
Dodes’ka-Den - 4/10
That Kurosawa is beautiful.
I am really looking forward to seeing it on Criterion. GREAT freakin’ movie. He was VERY unhappy at the poor reception the movie initially received.
Filmy
The last film I watched was Synecdoche N.Y and I would rate it 7/10.
can’t say I was happy but surely I was a little depressed.
can’t say if I enjoyed but surely appreciate the genius of kaufman
can’t say I understood the nuances but am sure whatever i saw moved me.
can’t say its a great movie but can’t even deny its greatness.
Kaufman complicates the plot on purpose, goes a step or two further from lynch and launches a in your face puzzle much like 81/2 or his own earlier movies and the end result atleast for me. Not so good.
