I am somewhat excited at the moment because, recently, I discovered several new lakes near to an M6 junction in my vicinity. It couldn’t get much better than that.

Very little is known about these pits, although research into the farm’s history shows that they are believed to have been excavated and stocked by monks during the Middle Ages and that sometime afterwards the pits were taken over by a angler who wanted to keep them all to himself. However, after obviously spending a lot of time and trouble on the waters, the angler seems to have disappeared and the pits have been subsequently left to their own devices. You could hardly get to the banks of the two main pools, which were hidden by trees and foilage, when the new owner bought the 100 acre farm one year ago.. Actually, the lakes were so heavily overgrown that the new owner didn’t even know they were there until he delved deeply into the undergrowth whilst walking around his new property.

The new owner has now kindly given me permission to fish here, though the best thing is that he has not advertised them and so they remain seldom fished. It’s still not known what is exactly in these lakes, early reports have suggested there are carp up to 30lbs and even a lone 20lbs sturgeon in there, but when I was there I saw much bigger fish cruising around on the surface in the hot weather. Most of the fish in there have never been caught before, they are in immaculate condition and I’m told that they give the fight of their lifes when you hook them. It’s hard to remember that only 12 months ago you had to fight your way through brambles and bushes to get to the waterside – and then had to contend with overhanging branches which made the fishing difficult. I should be able to post some pictures of what I catch there soon.

Better still, I now have 4 new ideas for screenplays I expect to complete soon – two of which I might turn into prose

I decided to fish more commercial waters instead, caught probably 1500lb of small carp and barbel over 10 sessions this summer. I have my doubts on whether they should stock barbel in stillwater but they look in good condition.

I caught one one of these Butterfly Carp today and just as the sky turned grey this popped out, only about 1lb but the longest fins. This is the closest picture I could find.

I should spend more time next to the water.

Post-winter break, have an outstanding new roster of students in my lit-and-film classes. And it’s finally cold here in Central Virginia.

In 2011

I turned 60 (December)

I saw over 1,000 films…mostly on DVD and on a large projection screen (I stopped working at age 55…so, plenty of time on my hands to indulge in my passion)

I visited Australia in April

I visited the UK, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Poland in the summer

Its a new day, I get to watch more films…life is good :)
