I picked up Malick’s The New World on bluray. I think the picture quality’s great, very natural & true to the movie. It’s a gorgeous movie & the bluray does it justice.

Neil isn’t kidding when he says ‘big shopping sprees’….heck of a collection.

I got:
“A Bridge Too Far” (Blu-Ray)
“2001” (Blu-Ray)
“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Diamond Edition)” (Blu-Ray)

I am waiting on:
“The Third Man” (Blu-Ray)
“Santa Sangre” (DVD 2-disc set.)

Claus, I was thinking of picking up A Bridge Too Far on blu-ray; what’s the quality like?

Neil,

“Bridge” looks faithful to my eye (58-inch screen used); it has a slight diffusion added to a lot of the scenes, which is typical of 70es productions when they wanted to indicate ‘earlier times.’ Color, texture, sharpness and black levels are good. Some process scenes have a bit of flicker in the stock, but nothing to worry about.

The sound is re-mastered into THX or Dolby Digital (take your pick) and runs cleanly in a predominantly L-C-R 3-channel mix with very little surround info (as would be expected.) Compared to dialogue, some of the action scenes get a bit louder than the inherent dynamics of the recordings warrant (I was running THX 5.1), probably just an attempt to make the track sound more ‘contemporary.’

One thing about the subtitles: if you just load the film and play it, you don’t get any subs in the Dutch and German segments, and if you do the normal thing and click the subtitle option to "English’ you now have subtitles throughout (as in: for the deaf.) The solution is to click through on your player’s remote to the last subtitle option which is also “English” (just before ‘off’) and you now will get subs only for the non-english segments. In other words, the film doesn’t have the Dutch/German subs ‘burned in’ by default.

There is a trailer, and that is it. No extras. Just a nice dual-layer MPEG-2 transfer of the film. Then again, I got it for $10 at CostCo, so I am not complaining. If you like big old-fashioned war films, this one is well worth having (the over-the-top casting in itself is amazing.)
