MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN
Rec
Diary of the Dead
I found THE STRANGERS to be very chilling. It is not a genre of film I usual like, but this film was well directed and really was genuinely frightening.
Oh and the recent remake of Last House on the Left was surprisingly effective.
yeah [Rec] is one of the best horror movies i’ve ever seen definitely check that out
also i liked infection a lot
Broken, from the UK, is very good. Also Calvaire from Belgium.
Eden Lake
Martyrs (I heard it was great anyways)
Acolytes (however a re-edit of the film could make it better)
Let the Right One In
The Mist
The Descent
The Strangers
Hannah Montana
The Mist is garbage which fools people with it’s shocking yet flat ending.
I’ll second Hannah Montana
Hannah Montana is funny, lol
There’s a nice new little horror fable out there called Joshua that is worth a look.
It’s just like The Omen but without the devil.
I found The Mist really entertaining, but I read the book so that had something to do with it.
The Descent – suprisingly scary?
The Strangers – although Liv Tyler’s whispering annoyed me to know end this movie is very creepy. don’t watch it in a dark cabin in the middle of nowhere which is, unfortunately, what i did…
The Last Winter
I wholeheartedly second The Midnight Meat Train. I never read the short story so I did NOT see that ending coming.
And King’s ending (or lack thereof) for The Mist made it so much more disturbing than Darabont’s.
El orfanato – The Orphanage (2007) a pretty intelligent ghost story
Calvaire – The Ordeal (2004) Belgium – this is like Deliverance on crack
Eskalofrio – Shiver (2008) Spain – some truly frightening moments
A l’interieur – Inside (2007) France – the first half of this is brilliant/second half over the top
Lat den ratte komma in – Let the Right One In (2008) Norway – i’m sure you’ve heard about it
Audition (1999) Japan – not that recent but this movie is awsome
I’m looking forward to seeing Rec when it becomes available in the USA
and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for The Antichrist.
Has anyone seen The Unborn? thumbs up/down?
Soybean- Very good description of Calvaire. That’s what it is.
I haven’t seen The Unborn
I don’t know about The Unborn but [REC] was a huge waste of time.
Inside was surprisingly great I thought.
I didn’t like most of the other ones already mentioned here; Calvaire, Midnight Meat Train, The Mist, Them, Diary of the Dead, etc. I’ve been pretty disappointed with recent Horror films. Let the Right One In was pretty good though…
damn! so few good horror films, I thought Rec was supposed to be a good one. the folks up above seemed to have liked it.
More favorites of mine:
Murder Party (not scary, just a whole lot of fun)
Silent Hill
Severed (treehugger zombie flick)
Wrong Turn I & II
Gwoemul, a.k.a. The Host
Mortuary
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (not so new)
The Hills Have Eyes (remake)
P2
Imprint (Episode of ‘Masters of Horror’ directed by Takashi Miike)
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Shaun of the Dead.
Ok, how about Funny Games (2007) the exactly the same remake.
The Unborn is absolutely terrible. I’m not very hard to please when it comes to horror movies, but it was just ridiculous. Not ridiculous like some people are saying Benjamin Button or Slumdog Millionaire was bad, I’m talking Uwe Boll bad. The Unborn had no redeeming qualities, other than a few unintentional comedic bits. I went with my girlfriend and her two little sisters (19 and 15) and no one found it scary, or even entertaining. Really, it’s the worst movies I’ve seen since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (which is wholely responsible for a month of deep depression.)
Cold Prey (Fritt Vilt) from Norway is very good. The cinematography is beautiful, and the filmmaker created a very powerful feeling of dread and mounting tension.
The Devil’s Backbone by Guillermo del Toro would be another to see.
Yeah, that’s what I thought somebody was going to say. Thanks Ben, I’ll look into Cold Prey, sounds promising. I saw The Devil’s Backbone when it first came out, I need to revisit that one too.
Rec is the opposite of a waste of time. It’s interesting, clever, scary, and some of the ways they film it are just ingenious. I know it’s available in Canada, not sure about the US.
^ No. It’s none of that. No offense, I just thought it was cliché as hell.
But see for yourself, Soybean. Be sure to tell me what you think of it when you do! I’m interested now.
Really? We’re gonna have to agree to disagree.
For just one example, the scene where the fireman drops out of nowhere. The reason why it’s so goddamn frightening is because not even the actors knew that scene was coming up next. They had them run through their lines and then just dropped this body out of the sky and the actors’ reactions are just that; the actors’ reactions.
Plus I’m a fan of the whole first person documentary way of shooting, and the way Rec is set up it’s not only believable that the camera man would know how to keep steady to the degree that the film is not nauseating in the least, as well as the fact that it becomes a useful tool when the lights go out.
Unfortunately it’s not available here just yet (US). So far I’ve heard good things about (REC) and very bad things about Quarantine. If I can find this thread when I do see it I’ll definitely post my thoughts. Samantha where did you see it? Why is this not available yet?
Ellis de Vries
I’m looking suggestions of recent horror films that pack an effective punch or are genuinely frightening and sinister.
Examples:
The Descent
Let the Right One In
The Orphanage
Them (Ils)
Thanks.
