I am going away to lock myself in a room for 10 years until the film has been released and disappeared into the $5.99 bin in a thrift store.
It’s going to suck. I think oldboy was overrated anyway. Too many plot holes and too predictable. It paled for me to the Far superior Mr. Vengeance.
It’s not actually a remake of the Korean film, rather it will be Spielberg’s adaptation of the original Oldboy manga. It could end up being fairly different to Park’s film, which I thought was excellent, but I still don’t expect it to be any good.
Original oldboy was great. I’ve never read the manga but I’ve heard some of the crazy horrifying things in the movie weren’t in the manga, so maybe no incest?
A friend of mine was personally involved with this remake when Scorsese had an interest in buying the US rights—never heard anything past that so I wonder if this is one of those film projects we will never actually see (thank God) like John Woo’s “Le Samourai” etc………
Personally I hope it falls away and just stands as a Park Film………….
i guess none of u are aware that this bollywood guy called sanjay gupta remade oldboy in hindi with a film called “ZINDA” N TRUST ME ITS MUCH MUCH BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL KOREAN FILM ESPECIALLY THE FIGHT SEQUENCES….THOU THE END HAD TO BE SOFTENED KEEPING IN MIND INDIAN AUDIENCES….BUT THIS ONE FILM IS OUTSTANDING N COMPARABLE TO ANYTHING THAT HOLLYWOOD CAN COME UP WITH…..i think its a 2006 realese in india.
ZINDA means ALIVE…..n it stars sanjay dutt n john abrahm….both have done a fab job in the movie.
I highly doubt it’s better than the original Korean one. Bollywood movies…usually….end up…uh…how can i say? horrible.

Zinda was a ripoff of Oldboy, not a ‘remake’. A remake has to be licensed by the studio.

Oldboy remade for a Hollywood audience is a freaking terrible proposal. The violence will be muted and the incest themes will most likely disappear altogether. If it’s a Spielberg/Smith collaboration it’ll just be some vacuous excuse for an action flick. Waste of time.
I haven’t seen Oldboy but going by the news all around ‘Zinda’ was frame by frame copy of the Korean masterpiece. I don’t think any auteur who really respects Cinema would do that, at least not without buying the movie rights. I have seen Zinda and it was okay.
It was just cut above the rest of Hindi movies and that guy is clearly exaggerating in Caps Locks by saying that it was “MUCH MUCH BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL.”
And I am not really sure if this Spielberg project will come to light. I have been hoping for the TINTIN for a long long time. Spielberg owns the rights to make movie based on story of Herge’s Tintin.

Any thoughts about this?
