Remembering The Quiet Man (1952)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

In honor of the occasion, I have scribbled my humble thoughts on a great classic, The Quiet Man, found via the link below.

Is it too early to quaff a Guinness? Must be Beer O’Clock somewhere.

Cheers,

Ah yes, that great Welshman St Patrick! I like the Quiet Man, for its lyricism and lovely settings, in Connemara where we’ve had a wonderful holiday. The gender politics and fighting Oirish stereotypes may wind some people up the wrong way, but overall i’d say it’s among Ford’s most pleasing and rewarding films.

I like the film a great deal, except for John Wayne’s really dreadful performance. How could Ford get such great work out of so many fine actors, and settle for such flat whiny crap from Wayne?

Are we ever going to get a competent release of this title?

A great Wayne/Ford collaboration. They always brought out the best in one another, and this film is no exception. Sort of a Irish send-up of the Taming of the Shrew between O’Hara and Wayne, except we also have a stubborn brother-in-law – McLaglen – thrown in for good measure. It is all done for good, clean fun – the brogue thicker than Irish cream (the great Barry Fitzgerald) – and the Irish shown to be hard drinking, hard living, and hard-headed – how can you not love ‘em? I enjoyed your write-up, Steve. We can now toast the day at the nearest Irish pub, quaff a Guinness, and get into a bit of a donnybrook with anyone who doesn’t love this bit o’ stuff. Luck o’ the Irish, to yah.

@ Mr. Stutsman ~ Cheers, Bob!

Ah’ve already ‘ad a few glasses o’ stout this eve, laddy, an’ ah’ve gladly got yer back if we shud ‘ave a donnybrook with any foolish wee trolls in need of a dustin’ tune-up this eve or any other. Crackin’ skulls is wot we be doin’, aye.

Cheers,

Cheers all, on this sacred day!

When I’ve finished spinning The Quiet Man, I may damn-well watch The Departed, too. if for no other reason than to hear cussin’ so eloquent it brings a tear to me eye.

Aye.
