What? For real???? :(

Two directors in a week…must be some kind of a jinx…sigh….a pity, maybe it’s time to explore his filmography more. I’ve always loved Tokyo Godfathers!

Incredible, can’t believe it. Millennium Actress could be the greatest piece of animation ever made. can’t believe it.

It’s hard not to wonder what else he could have created. :-( He will continue to inspire.
Has anyone heard yet how he died?

His entire filmography is amazing. Satoshi Kon easily ranks as one of the best animators up to this point in history, right up there with Walt Disney and Hayao Miyazaki.

RIP.

Very well put. I’m trying to refrain from making bitter jokes about the death of anime in poor taste; with all due respect, however, I’m sure it’s on a lot of people’s minds. Anime at large gets worse and worse, while Miyazaki gets older and now we’re down one of the best hopes for the medium’s future. My hopes now rest almost entirely on the shoulders of Masaaki Yuasa. Of course we also have brilliant animators like Koji Yamamura and Kunio Kato, but men like them are few and far between in the endless deluge of generic lolicon pandering that has turned anime into a joke of an industry (and, in my opinion, an increasingly embarrassing cultural export for Japan).

I had imagined Kon as one of the few that would grow old with anime while helping anime to grow up.

“One adult, please.”

He’ll be missed.

I had really been looking forward to his next film (The Dream Machine, described by Kon as “a road movie for robots”). I hope Madhouse chooses to finish it in his honor.

It’s farewell to a giant of the genre. It’s so sad that he died so young. Perfect Blue is a masterpiece, and though I find Paprika to be a flawed film, it’s so visually stunning that none of the flaws matter.

Meanwhile (actually, one month ago), Storywriter Sato Dai is frustrated with Japanese anime.

This subject might warrant its own thread, but it’s relevant enough.
