Robert Altman

I just watched Short Cuts and I think I got something wrong with Robert Altman until now. I first watch M*A*S*H after hearing about it a lot and frankly, I didn’t enjoy it. I then watch McCabe & Miss Miller that I find more interesting but still, there was something missing I thought. And now I watch Short Cuts and boy was it good. Outplayed Magnolia all the way imo. Pretty good storyline, character and everything.

Knowing this, could you suggest one or two movies from Altman I should watch right now? I was looking forward to The Player.

Thanks

I enjoyed The Player a lot… I would recommend it. Also, Gosford Park.

The Player is fantastic, but the true precident for Short Cuts is Nashville. It uses the same format of a large number of characters representing a community, but the characters are so compassionately fleshed out that the results, for me, far surpass Short Cuts.

I actually had an opposite reaction – of sorts – to 2112; I loved all of the Altman films I’ve seen down through the years (with Nashville being my favourite), and had heard so much about Short Cuts that I couldn’t wait to see it…and I was a bit disappointed. I have it here somewhere so I am going to give it another go over Christmas.

“short cuts” was very average to me. not much emotion in it. the ending seemed a little ridiculous also. didnt quite mesh with the overall tone and approach.

Nashville would be the next one to watch. I also liked 3 Women. It’s a smaller movie but really interesting.

The Player was really good.

And if you liked Short Cuts I’d recommend checking out Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia. It’s heavily inspired by Short Cuts.

Actually P.T.A was good friends with Altman, he even did a favor for Altman being a back up direcotr for Prairie Home Companion (Altman needed a backup because he was 80 and couldn’t get insurance for the movie otherwise)

who cares about PTA,check out Images (oh yes!),McCabe and Mrs Miller and i personally admired his failure Popeye.
The Player is a good way to continue with his filmography too and it’s filled with Hollywood sarcasm.

haven’t seen Nashville but will get to it.

Just saw The Player and by far my favorite from him of the few I’ve seen. Really really good.

Except not one single non-white character in the huge otherwise eclectic cast!

Not even Altman’s go-to negro, and BFF, Harry Belafonte.

Short Cuts is perhaps Altman’s most ambitious and fully accomplished film. Really gets the texture of day-to-day living like few films in history.

I got into Altman fairly recently. I saw ten of his films in a single month. The films I like best of his are McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Long Goodbye, 3 Women, Nashville, Short Cuts, The Company, Secret Honor, The Player

His miniseries Tanner ‘88 is one of the great political satires, attacking the machinery of the big-budget political campaign in all it’s teeming compromises. And his latter-day sequel Tanner on Tanner is a parody/deconstruction/ode to the recent craze for documentary film-making and the collapse of the Democractic Party.

He is without a doubt one of the major American artists of the last forty to fifty years.

theres no way “short cuts” really captures LA. not my LA, at least. maybe it captures the valley, or orange county.

That really captures the city. Racism was built right into its housing laws and restrictive “covenants.”

Won’t get involved in this criticism of Short Cuts other than to remind everybody that the film is based on the writings of Raymond Carver.

I highly recommend both Nashville and 3 Women.

I have recently watched five Altman films in quick succession and he is definitely for me one of the most accomplished American auteurs of the past half century.

I think so far I have seen three masterpieces in Nashville, Images and McCabe and Mrs Miller.

On top of that California Split and The Long Goodbye are marvellously entertaining films which veer close to masterpieces, they are both 9/10’s.
