RUY GUERRA, UNDERAPPRECIATED MASTER

Eurich

Ruy Alexandre Guerra Coelho Pereira, born in Marques (now Maputo), Mozambique, in 1931, is a filmmaker and screenwriter who worked mostly in Brazil during the fertile years of Cinema Novo.

Guerra studied at IDHEC film school in Paris from 1952. In 1958 he started his career as an assistant director in several French films. Later on he immigrated to Brazil, where he directed his first feature film, Os Cafajestes (1962). It was entered into the 12th Berlin International Film Festival.
In 1964, Guerra directed Os Fuzis, which placed him in the forefront of the emerging Cinema Novo movement. The film was entered into the 14th Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Silver Bear Extraordinary Jury Prize.

But even more important than the fact Os Fuzis won the Silver Bear, is that…

NOW IT’S AVAILABLE WITH ENGLISH SUBS!! Yeah! Just click here!

There were some incomprehensible lines and others I couldn’t understand, but the latter is because of the terrible quality of the film we have. Don’t mind, though, with the untranslated speeches, it won’t spoil this explosive experience. I hope this will motivate others to work on subs for films such as Koundouros’s 1922, Im’s Mandala and, of course, many of the Saless films! (among hundreds of others)

…Unfortunately these will be the last subs I work on for a while. As some of you might know, this is my last year of school, and it’s considered the busiest of them all. Don’t know how active I’ll be from now on, certainly will try to log in as much as possible, even if that means I’ll only have time to see how Kuxa’s African Project is going. ;) But I’m glad to have enjoyed these last two months of vacations, and even more thanks to some people from this site.

[To the mods: Please note I only posted a link to YT, and nothing more. Hope you don’t find any reason to shut this thread down. :P]

Awesome!

I’ve only seen Eréndira, which has something going for it, but I’m sure it’s not one of his best. I’m also looking forward to watch Turbulence / Estorvo.

Guerra is indeed an underappreciated master, I watched his feature debut “Os Cafajestes” some time ago (one of those films that initiated the first phase of Cinema Novo) and it left a huge impression on me. Blue K compared it to Antonioni which I think is a good point since the film equally deals with ennui, frustated love and twisted male-female relations. The coming to senses at the beach during night is one of those stunningly intense sequences which only few directors are capable of. It’s quite a surprise that Guerra’s even more well-known “Os Fuzis” which critics rank as one of the most significant Brazilian films and a key work of Cinema Novo hasn’t even been available with English subs thus far, so one can’t thank Cedric enough for finally changing this situation and giving cinephiles the chance to watch and understand it. I will check it out in the next couple of days and come back to this thread with my impression (while hoping that the thread still exists by then).

Cedric, I love you. If you ever need an organ transplant, hit me up. If i die a premature death, I’ll bequeath you my majestic penis.

Ah, c’mon Blue, that’s just wrong. Shouldn’t such a magnificent organ be left to five or six people rather than forcing one man to carry the, um, full weight of the legend?

More weriously, Cedric, you are indeed awesome. I’ll be looking forward to watching this soon.

Thanks Cedric. I also love Guerra’s “Opera do Malandro” which I don’t think his available with english subtitles (wink, wink). The movie is just great and it seems to be largely forgotten, even in Brazilian film lists.

The title track can be heard here

Threepenny Opera-Chico Buarque.

Thank you all for the words on this! Hope you’ll enjoy it! Those who have seen Os Fuzis, please share your thoughts on this thread, since it’s unlikely it will be deleted. Good or bad, would like to hear the impressions you had about the film – and opinions about the subs too!

I was surprised how fluid the film is, with the camera movement and the often quite blurred images, softness of focus. I could do with reading up more on it, doubtless Johnson and Stam’s book on Brazilian films will be useful, but i think the general effect was a bit languid and distancing, for any emotional involvement with characters until the powerful later scenes of the soldiers and the hunted and anguished looking “gaucho”. The macho aspect of guns, and military ego, are undercut earlier, but though a stand is taken and a price paid by some in the military too, establishment forces and superstition aren’t so easily dislodged. The form of the film seems quite original to me.

Thanks for the hard work!
I saw this today and really enjoyed it.The sense of impending doom permeated the whole village. The tension between the soldiers was also dramatic. The editing was also very impressive- esp whenever he chose to cut to the prophet. The music and sound design were good also.

I want to dwell on this a little more, and hopefully read some other people’s impressions. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I was enthralled. I saw Katyn yesterday and was kind of bored. I also knew what was going to happen but it didn’t click with me for some reason.
