Can someone please explain to me the use of “gay” as an adjective to describe something negatively. When people first started using that word in that way, I was speechless (I am somewhat indifferent to it now, though it still doesn’t make sense). It just seemed wrong to me in so many ways. But everybody uses it, including gay people. And nobody seems to care. So confused
I think this is all you need to know, Captain:
@ Drunken: I honestly didn’t know there was a campaign like that ( I actually liked the Wanda Sykes one better though :)
But is that fairly new? Because that is the first time I have EVER heard anyone but myself protest the use of the word in that way.
Oh really? Do you live in the U.S.? I don’t feel like people really use that pejoratively anymore… but maybe it’s just where I live… But I think most people agree that it’s inappropriate…. I hope, at least…
>>But is that fairly new?<<
Not new at all, but as we have become more conscious of gay rights and the struggles it entails, using the term that way has become more and more frowned upon.
I live in the U.S. In the South (love the South, though I am very aware that we are often behind the times).
It is very possible that people don’t use the word in that way anymore. After I realized that it seemed like nobody cared about it, I just said to myself “well, nobody else seems to care, including gay people, so don’t fight it”. So if people have or have not been saying it for the past 4-5 years, I don’t know. But even if that term is no longer in style, the indifference to it while it was in style still baffles me

i thought it was mostly 13 yr olds who did that?
@dada and doofu, thx for your contributions. it’s good to know not all men are sexist pigs. ok most of them aren’t :P
@linden i’m sorry you’ve been exposed to the dark side of mubi so soon. we hope you’ll stay anyway. it’s not always so dramatic
^^^I’m sure 13 year olds say it, but I first heard it about 10 years ago, when I was 20, and it was prevalent for 20-30 year olds.

Think I’ve got a theme song for this thread:

:)
Time to close this thread, I think.
thank you house
only been able to skip around this thread. so it’s basically about one side saying play nice and the other saying stop being sensitive.
as a full blooded alpha male, probably the most alpha here, i must say…it’s mubi. of course there is a certain decorum one must abide by.
i would normally challenge this cause i despise politically correctness, but this is too awesome a place to discuss film to risk getting banned from the forums.
Yes Please!!!
